stash report September 30, 2018

I found a bundle of fabric at goodwill and thought I saw some goodies in it, so it came home with me.

I have a hanging sleeve to attach by hand today for the quilt show next week. I am ready for some hand stitching.

feeling blue

I had a chance to catch up with my birch trees quilt from last week and the rainbow scrap challenge.

depending on the color next month, I am ready to start laying this out and deciding what colors I need to make to balance the colors I already have made.

I cut the squared away blocks and took them to Friday group. And then there was trouble with a capital T and it rhymes with turned out wrong. Amid the talking and busyness of the group, I realized I was missing some half square triangles in the accent color. fine.. I will just work with what I had and make a variation. smile.. but, then when I laid it out, I realized it was turned wrong anyway. so I threw it all back in the box and worked on oriental pinwheels. Good to have a backup plan.

At home, I thought I would work on a brand new block and, perhaps, get it right. Which I think I did.
I cut more, and still had to redo parts. I am triangle challenged. I can look right at a picture, see it in my head and turn them around, and this one had me fuddled.

SO one down, one to go, and one to try and save.

hexies and one monthly goal

All the green and brown hexies are attached to Mrs. Holder's hexagon quilt. I decided to"finish" Mrs. holder's hexagon quilt. so I am working my way to a rectangle.

It is the end of the month already and it's time to see how I did with my one monthly goals.

"For my one monthly goal this month, I want to finish the strings for orca bay, finish roll roll cotton boll, and I want to start a unicorn quilt for my Granddaughter."

I did finish the strings for orca bay and cut and started the piecing work.

I finished roll roll cotton boll

And I decided on a pattern for the unicorn quilt. That's a start.

hooking a leaf

I have a leaf hooked in my Cleveland rug. I am guessing it symbolizes the botanical gardens. It's fun to revisit Cleveland and the biennial in memories as I hook this rug.

It has been awhile since I worked on the Christmas snowflake quilt. But I was able to sew another red one. I only need 3 more blocks to begin assembly.

Linda from Friday quilt group has finished a quilt of valor for the vet's home.

and another donation quilt for the police department. This one included donated fabric from the guild.
She collects the quilts from the guild in October to make one big donation.

wedding ring row

miles and miles of twosies for the double wedding ring quilt. This a really great quilt along with Jo Kramer of Jo's Country junction.  I am so glad I used her color ideas.

And this is where I am. I can see the bottom

From last week - no bottom

It was time to try rows - hooray - it looks like a row - short but it looks like a row. magical My quilt will be 7 x7. It seems odd to say I can assemble the rows when all the arcs aren't all sewn together.

crazy template

I have several blocks finished for the oriental pinwheel quilt using the scrap crazy 6 templates. I was able to see them together and see what secondary pattern it will make.

I might like it better with sashing....

When I have enough blocks, I want to see if I like it on point. These colors are not my usual pick, but I like using something I might not use otherwise. How I started this quilt is here and here. which do you like?

On another dig through old stuff, I found a stack of books I don't remember. ahem . I want to go through them and decide if they are worth keeping. The problem with that, is that every time I do that over the years, I like something other than the ones I had previously marked. If my preferences change over time, maybe the inspiration never does.

All the quilts are nice enough, but just not what I want right now. I bet I bought the book for the top right and bottom right quilts.

But, now, I really like this one. I will probably never get around to making it, but I am keeping the book and I took pictures to remind me that I like it.

Do you hang on to books and magazines?

roll roll

As part of my mystery quilt challenge, I have finished roll roll cotton boll, Bonnie Hunter's mystery from 2010, and her 7th mystery, and my 11th finish.
I want to have it in the guild show this  October, even if I did lose most of the points on the border, so I still need a sleeve and label, but I count it finished. I really like the neutral string background. And the colors are great, very traditional and cozy.

stash report September 23, 2018

There was a sale on craftsy. I start way too many blog posts with a stash report that way, or some variation with the word sale.
I bought the halloween fabric for a quilt that I had seen, but other stuff  jumped in the box as well.

a layer cake, 2 jelly rolls, and 3 charm packs

and two fat quarter bundles.

I am going to start connecting these 3/4 inch hexagons to Mrs. Holder's hexagon quilt for my slow Sunday stitching. I can't wait.

blue trees

I am a little short for the rainbow scrap challenge. this week. I really didn't take the time to get this week's blocks together. I did get them planned.
I only wanted 2 dark blue blocks for my birch trees. I cut the 12 1/2 in background squares

And I sewed a few strips together for the tree inserts.

I have spent a little time each day sewing hourglass units for orca bay and pieces for my double wedding ring. I am not seeing great progress at this point, but I am moving forward. I am still a little blurry with my cataract surgery. I have a big quilt finish I will share on Monday.

stitching hexagons

Last week I decided to"finish" Mrs. holder's hexagon quilt. I spent the week cutting, glue basting, and adding the red and neutral row around the quilt. There were 54 hexagons in that ring. I certainly have rebuilt my calluses for hand stitching. This is the last ring before I start to turn it into a rectangle.

I saw a blurb somewhere about making bread machine bread mixes ahead of time, and I wanted to try that. Sometimes, just the idea of getting everything out of the cupboard to load the machine is enough to deter making bread. But, hubby really likes raisin bread in the morning, so I made a few ahead. I also made a few honey oat mixes. I am pretty sure the days of making it from scratch and hand kneading it are forever gone. I am happy enough using the bread machine. I want to try making a few pizza dough mixes too.

This is an awesome finish last week at Friday group. all the rows are patterns from Jen Kingwell, but the row by row was her idea.

cleveland rug

Just above Mr Dinosaur is an orbity thing. I had a list at one time of what was on the rug, but I am not sure what this stands for in Cleveland. There is a round thing at the museum of natural history, and it is near the dinosaur on the rug, so maybe that is it. I just used leftovers that I had.

 Let's say that is it.

more double wedding ring

My cataract surgery went well... so far, I wasn't sure I would feel like blogging, but something simple will do.
I am still working on sewing pieces together for the double wedding ring quilt.  I try to work on it every morning.

Last week our challenge was to add the 3rd mellon to the center.

I am very thrilled with my progress. It looks like it is supposed to look. I am guessing this week is all about rows.

template experiment

Last week I took my scrap crazy 6 template out of the package to see what I can do with it. I cut some of the fabric that I had set aside for a bog coat, since, I had decided not to make a bog coat. I thought the cutting was easy and each piece is shaped so that they fit together really well.

What I hadn't considered when I was cutting this was the idea of mirror image cutting. I had wrong sides together so that All the pieces were not facing the same direction.

It's hard to see much difference but it will show up when putting the blocks together. I am going with the idea that, at least, if I consistently cut them the same - then the blocks will be consistently wrong.
I like the parts I decided to highlight.
I will know better when I get several blocks together.

Tomorrow I will have cataract surgery. Yes, I am a little anxious. And I don't know how much time I will need to get back into THE groove.

piecing orca bay

The string blocks are finished for Quiltville mystery quilt Orca Bay, so it is time to move on to the pieced blocks. It looks like they are mostly ohio star blocks with alternating black and white corners and a red center. I have an accuquilt die for the quarter square triangles which makes it easier to cut. I need a massive amount. No matter how hard I tried, the little pieces just wouldn't come out in an orderly way.

They are only 1 1/2 inch and fiddley.

The hourglass block is 2 1/2 inches and, oh, so cute. I need almost 250 of them. My plan is to make 10 every morning for sure, as well as the double wedding ring, before breakfast and then, if I get time during the day that will be a bonus. It will be slow but steady. If I don't make a time, I won't get to it.

I have the first 10 finished.
