hexies and one monthly goal

All the green and brown hexies are attached to Mrs. Holder's hexagon quilt. I decided to"finish" Mrs. holder's hexagon quilt. so I am working my way to a rectangle.

It is the end of the month already and it's time to see how I did with my one monthly goals.

"For my one monthly goal this month, I want to finish the strings for orca bay, finish roll roll cotton boll, and I want to start a unicorn quilt for my Granddaughter."

I did finish the strings for orca bay and cut and started the piecing work.

I finished roll roll cotton boll

And I decided on a pattern for the unicorn quilt. That's a start.

roll roll

As part of my mystery quilt challenge, I have finished roll roll cotton boll, Bonnie Hunter's mystery from 2010, and her 7th mystery, and my 11th finish.
I want to have it in the guild show this  October, even if I did lose most of the points on the border, so I still need a sleeve and label, but I count it finished. I really like the neutral string background. And the colors are great, very traditional and cozy.

Jo of Jo's country junction is trying to finish all the quilts in quiltville's string fling book before the new book is published. I am trying to finish all the mystery quilts as part of that challenge before the new mystery in November. My challenge finishes here

rol roll rug

I have roll roll cotton boll  Quiltville mystery quilt on the frame. I am hoping by the end of the week, it will be finished.

I've decided to break my Cleveland rug into mini goals. The whole premise for the rug is to include landmarks from the city. Since Cleveland is right on Lake Erie, there were several water references. I finished the sail boat. Above that is the skyline in white.

I had Grandkids for a visit on Labor Day. I sure enjoy their visits.

one monthly goal recap

I want to revisit my goals for the month of August and see how I have done. It's hard to believe we are at the end of another month. And today is my 44th wedding anniversary.

For August, I want to continue work on stella cyranna. I have the pieced rows finished, and it is time to assemble and work on the wool applique.
I had trouble with the instructions on the wool applique. I have only a picture to go by, and to me, the amount of wool is not adequate for the color combinations I am seeing.

I want to quilt roll roll cotton boll. I found a backing, so I need to make the binding, and, I have two customer quilts, and then I can quilt it.
It's quilt show time for the guild, so a couple of other quilts snuck in front of Roll roll for quilting, but I have entered it into the show, so it will be done.

I want to string piece for orca bay ( here are other images) for the next mystery quilt finish.
I have all the blue string blocks finished. There are 72 and now I move on to red string pieced blocks.

I need to decide borders on snow days and prepare to quilt. I think it will be a while until I quilt it.
Nothing decided. I was distracted by the double wedding ring quilt along.

getting started with orca bay quilt

Roll roll Cotton boll is in the quilting cue waiting it's turn. And as much as I would like to completely finish it before starting the next quiltville mystery quilt, it could be awhile. So, I began planning orca bay. I was sure I had the string parts finished, but I can't find them anywhere or any mention of them in my master lists. I don't know how I missed this mystery quilt. I've done parts of all the others. Oh well. Time to start at the beginning. I was just going to cut the foundation papers and be very happy with my progress.

But, then, I wondered, do I really have any blue strips in the strip bin. um not very many, and the next thing I know, I am having a gay ole time digging in the strip bins ( yes more than one).

And the next thing was to see how a few blocks will look. - cute

And, by the time TV time was over, I had 29 finished. The hardest part was finding the blue strips.

I would have preferred to make this quilt mystery style, finishing every clue, but, it is in Quiltville book string fling. find it here at quiltville

I am enjoying my mystery quilt challenge in conjunction with Jo's string challenge here, I have created a page for my challenge here.

binding ready

In conjunction with Jo's string challenge here, I am doing mine as a quiltville mystery quilt challenge. All I did this week for Roll roll cotton boll is prepare the back and the binding. I like to attach my binding on the long arm while I am quilting it. So, when a place opens up on the long arm, I will get it quilted.

I am so impressed with Jo's finish today, and I would love to make it, but, I don't have any scraps from batiks, only yardage. And I don't think I can just cut up yardage for string piecing. could you?

I have started cutting the applique for stella cyranna. The instructions are vague, so I am having problems figuring out what colors are what. I don't see that I have enough gold for all the pieces that look like I need it, so I may have to dye something similar. sigh...

jupiter and one monthly goal

I have 2 blocks finished for Drops of Jupiter. There was almost only one. I am not sure I am liking it, and every seam is an inset seam. But, making two was better.

A new month is time for new goals for One monthly goal at Elm street quilts.

For August, I want to continue work on stella cyranna. I have the pieced rows finished, and it is time to assemble and work on the wool applique.

July goals

My One Monthly goals for July might have been ambitious. But, I am pleased with my progress. I wanted to assemble the quiltville mystery roll roll cotton boll, and I did. just this morning. I still haven't pressed it, and I want to get it ready to quilt. I am even thinking I like it enough to enter it in the guild quilt show in September. We will see after I quilt it.

I wanted to assemble snow days and finish the stitching, and I did. I think it needs a border, though.

I had hoped to get one more block for Across the wide Missouri, but, this is as far as I have gotten. I am not comfortable with applique, yet, and it is a good thing that it is supposed to look primitive.

I enjoy participating in the One Monthly Goal. It helps me plan and keeps me a little more focused. I would be all over the place otherwise.

roll roll fixed

As part of my quiltville mystery quilt challenge along side Jo's country junction string challenge, I am working on roll roll cotton boll. Last week, I had put the rows together creating two halves and there was an oops. It is fixed now, and the center is all in one piece.

I was able to add the inner border. There is a pieced outer border, and, generally, there is a bit of math to decide the width of the inner border, but, the pattern just gave directions for the cutting. I am hoping it will work with my piecing. If not there will be another oops post. I really like this quilt. It might be one of my favorites.

I also added the triangle border to my rainbow pineapple blossom quilt. This time I did the math to decide the width of the inner border and it worked. I want to add a white border still to the outside.

This was a fun customer quilt for a nurse. The fabric is so cute. She just wanted an all over stipple.

roll roll oops

I was so thrilled to get this far on assembling roll roll cotton boll and, then, to discover something is wrong. hmmm
The middle row is backwards or upside down. bummer... On point settings are always challenging for me.

I do not want to take a whole row off.

I realized I didn't have to take the whole row off and turn it, I just need to take the ends off and switch them. That's not so bad.

goals for the quarter

I have some goals that I haven't really set a time limit, and I think that would make it easier to accomplish. I am joining the third quarter goals to become more accountable, and a quarter goal seems just right for these projects, since I am working them in around my monthly goals. She can quilt is hosting a finish along  that will help motivate me.

I finished the hooking on the victoria ann rug, and I really hate the whole finishing thing. I have 8 hooked pieces that I just don't finish for that reason.

1. My sewing machine is straight stitch only, so I need to dig out a zigzag machine and zigzag the edges an inch from the hooking and trim.
2. roll the edge around a cord and baste into place.
3. decide on a yarn -or dye it if I can't find it.
4. hand sew the yarn around the edges
5. clean and press
6. stand back and admire

I am trying to finish all the quiltville mystery quilts as part of a challenge at Jo's country junction. I am working on Roll roll cotton boll. I have all the rows pieced.

1. press
2. begin assembling rows with an on point setting. Press
3. measure and cut, sew inner border
4. measure and cut, sew outer border
5. prepare for quilting
maybe quilt and bind

I have last year's rainbow scrap challenge quilt that no longer falls into the goals for this year's challenge, but I still want to finish it before it falls off the radar and into the black hole.

1. piece the HST border, press
2. measure and cut the inner border
3. measure and cut the HST border
4. decide about any other border
5. prepare for quilting
maybe quilt and bind.

And Jo's country junction is hosting a double wedding ring QAL that I really want to join, but, can I?
