dwr quilt along

Today is the new installment of Jo's country junction double wedding ring quilt along. I was following Jo's instructions and "assignment" from last week, and it just didn't look right. Good instructions wrong template. My template is set up a little differently. Why did I keep sewing when it was obvious it wasn't fitting? I was hoping there was some kind of magic in the curve. But, sigh, there was not.

I need 6 pieces for the arc and two more pieces for each end. Then the pieces fit and even stay flat. It helps to read the instructions that came with my template.

I was still concerned that I wasn't reading any of it right. But it will look right when I add the squares in the center. right?

My friend Linda is also doing this quilt along with me and us. She has all her pieces cut, all the arcs sewn and has started adding them to the melon. She is an overachiever.
She is using Jo's templates and it is smaller than mine.

I am really excited to be sewing along and so far it hasn't been bad....yet.

Oh Scrap

In conjunction with Jo's string challenge here, I am doing mine as a quiltville mystery quilt challenge. All I did this week for Roll roll cotton boll is prepare the back and the binding. I like to attach my binding on the long arm while I am quilting it. So, when a place opens up on the long arm, I will get it quilted.

I am so impressed with Jo's finish today, and I would love to make it, but, I don't have any scraps from batiks, only yardage. And I don't think I can just cut up yardage for string piecing. could you?

I have started cutting the applique for stella cyranna. The instructions are vague, so I am having problems figuring out what colors are what. I don't see that I have enough gold for all the pieces that look like I need it, so I may have to dye something similar. sigh...

I am following along with Jo of Jo's country junction and her string challenge. I am doing my own version, but with quiltville mystery quilts. I have been working on lazy Sunday for the month of March. I began thinking I would have this done very quickly, but it has met a few road blocks. I finished the quilting this weekend, and I am ready for some evening time hand sewing the binding for a finish.

I had a chance to add a little more stitching to snow days. After the churn dash was added I could add the transfer eze to the bottom portion of the block for the upper portion of the tree. I love how crabapple hill designed this to continue into the piecing.

It's official that we are not moving to New York. My hubby does not have a job prospect yet, but we are hopeful.

green in the rainbow

It's March already and time for green in the rainbow scrap challenge at soscrappy.
I do have a bunch of 2 1/2 inch strips I will use for my soul searching quilt.

I have been gone for a week and I only took snow days quilt with me. So the best I could do for Jos Country junction challenge and block of the month, was to cut out and web another block for my Christmas sampler BOM. But progress is progress.

While in Buffalo, we tried to experience local flavors. Most diners and cafes served at a liquor bar as well. This was breakfast at Sopias's. with homemade bread french toast. And yes, they were ordering cocktails at breakfast.

We just had to see Niagra Falls and it is just as spectacular in the winter.

We ate a buffalo treat -chocolate sponge candy too. yum.

A Christmas challenge

Jo of Jo's Country junction has offered a block of the month challenge on Saturdays at her blog. I have no trouble finding a few block of the month projects that I have let slide into the abyss of UFOS to work at completing. The one I want to focus on first is a Christmas Block of the month from a LQS.
I signed up for a block of the month about 40 miles from home several years ago. The sign up fee was 15.00  for all the fabric we would need, and we received a hunk of jelly roll strips and a hunk of 5 inch squares in Christmas colors. Our job was to attend a meeting every Saturday, and they would give us a spiel about new fabrics and new tools in the shop, and if we brought our completed block to the meeting, the next pattern was free.. It seemed well worth the expense, and I was convinced I would have no trouble attending the Saturday meeting. After all I am a responsible person. Gosh, I hated that drive....I have 7 blocks completed. I think I will need 12 before I can think about what to do with them.

 There were several different kits, so I am inclined to think it was their way of cleaning out their scrap bins. We didn't get to choose, they came in paper bags. I liked the colors, but felt that there was a lot of darks.

 There were no instructions in my box, so I have misplaced them. And I didn't attend the last few meetings. Everything was made using 2 1/2 inch thangles. So I can just make my own assortment of triangles and call it good.

Today is the rainbow scrap challenge at super scrappy. The color for January is light blue.

I started with my 2 1/2 inch strip bin and cut for a quilt called soul searching. My blue bin still won't close, so using the lighter blues was a blessing.

I cut the pieces at my Friday sew group. It didn't take long before I had one ginormous block ready to go.

After  working on On ringo lake the pieces and the block seemed huge. I think I am really going to like this quilt. And Elvis has made an appearance LOL

I don't know where it comes from. I am winging it from a picture I saw on a blog.

These are the pieces I am using for clue 4 of the On ringo lake mystery quilt found here at quiltville.

This time I used a 50/50 mix of starch and water. I soaked them and then hung them to dry. They were like cardboard LOL. I think the solution was a little too hard so next time I will try 60 water/40 starch.

I do like using starch. These pieces weren't going anywhere. When I used the accuquilt, they didn't even stick to the plastic cutting sheet.

Once I put the pieces together, they did not budge. Not even a pressure foot could  move them. So they were the best pieces I could have sewn.

Jo at Jos country junction has a string fling challenge. Last week I talked about scraps and shirttails and how close I am to finishing all the quilts from that book. This week I have checked with my string fling book.
