wild child

I have finished my Wild Child Quilt, a Bonnie Hunter pattern from her book String Fling. Mine is a little different. I don't really like to string piece, but I like to make crumb blocks. I decided to try that in the centers, which made me a happier quilter  Jo Kramer had been making one see hers here, and I caught the bug from her and began by cutting down bigger crumb blocks already in my stash. Once I found the border print, it came together nicely.

My daughter, while visiting, made this little quilt for a baby shower gift. She often out produces me and has a natural hand at piecing. But I remember how un interested she has been through her time at home. On her own, she is a fine quilter now. oh, and by the way, she used my fabric, my batting, my machine, my pattern, my longarm,  .......

Sauder rug hooking week

Our trip to Rug hooking week in Archbold Ohio was so interesting. I went thinking I was going to enjoy the vendors and the displays, but found learning was so much more fun. This display was a hoot. There was nothing politically correct about this rug artist.

James and Mercedes Hutchinson were husband and wife who commissioned rugs for a period of 20 years 1920s to 1950s. They designed the rugs together.

One of their rugs is for sale for 4800.00  or this one for 6875.00

I wonder if this was displayed in their home, just how lively was their  Thanksgiving family dinner.

I had occasion to want this rug for my own. enough said.
Every rug in the collection was so unique, but the colors and design were consistent.

This was an exceptionally hooked rug. The details were amazing.

The pattern was from this book and designer Kathy Brown

I have a couple of her books. THe directions were great and the pattern was easy. It was done very quickly and then it had to get into a long line of my own quilts waiting a turn on the longarm.
I moved this one up to be a birthday gift, next month. I am a little nervous to give it since I played around with the quilting - doodling swirls and a few feathers, and I am not so happy with the results. But her favorite color is blue and I think she will like the fabric.

My August swap hexies have arrived from the great state of Texas. I have asked in the swap to receive civil war reproduction fabrics. These are just perfect. Thank you Irene.

Shopping therapy

While everyone else was without power, and buying flashlights and batteries, I wanted out of dodge and fabric buying. Preferably, somewhere with electricity ( air conditioning) and a place to charge electronics, And a little pretend nothing is wrong therapy.
Noblesville's Always in Stitches was celebrating their anniversary with a fabric sale. Fat quarter bundles of their choosing were 25 fat quarters for 30.00  They have a yarn shop in the store where I purchased sock yarn bits for the miter corner blanket, and a new needle saver.

I have a quilt finish and lovely slow binding to hand sew. One of my very favorite parts.

My friend wanted to try a new yarn shop in Noblesville where I fell in love with this sock yarn of alpaca, silk, and cashmere.
I also bought a sock yarn that will knit up as fair isle - sounds interesting

The Creative Side

Happy Birds group

Our Happy Birds group met this week,  and scratched our heads. I felt a bit of frustration in trying to piece the center medallion.

 

Perhaps, I was too cavalier about the piecing, because that didn't work.

I even tried hand piecing it. Even before pressing, I could see it was hopeless. sigh....
One of our group decided to try appliquing each colored piece and then attaching that to the next circle.

It looks better, but I am still not good at applique so I will save that for the parts where I have to applique....

And now I have a plan. I will not let this be the place I quit.

We are up and running

We have power. I am now old enough, that I didn't think for one minute that it was an adventure. Nope, not one second. We have lived here for 27 years and probably lost power a dozen times, so I knew we could figure it out, but.. I was whiney.




I was working on this quilt on the longarm

With this much to go when the alerts for extreme weather started coming in. Outside did not look threatening. Then I saw this, and started taking pictures.



 

It was headed east toward town. And that was the first of 12 tornadoes in my little community. Miraculously, there were no serious injuries.

 

There were 25 people in this starbucks when it was hit. They had rushed into the restroom, and none of them were harmed.  Across the street many houses were flattened and damaged.

We lost power from the first tornado almost as I was snapping pictures. And I had forgotten how much I take for granted. We have a well so without power, we also have no water. All these years, we have not given into the idea of a generator, but this time we did.

 

They are noisy but we finally, could sleep. Both my husband and I need sleep machines at night, and I was so tired after a night without mine. They really do help.

I really missed sewing - I could treadle but the lighting was challenging.

I have a box of strings I like to use on the treadle.

We were truly blessed .

Tornadoes

My community had over 8 tornadoes yesterday. We were so fortunate. We were not damaged or injured. just shaken up and concerned. However we don't have power or water or power left on most of our electronic devices.

What does the fox say

Moving along on my Forest Frenzy quilt... I have foxes everywhere. What will they say?

That foxes are easier than bunnies. I think the pattern is excellent and well written. The hardest part is the organization of all the little pieces in different fabrics. But if you follow Elizabeth Hartman's instructions it works.

Ring a ding ding

I started sewing chunky churn dash from Bonnie Hunter. I have 23 blocks finished. Each block is scrappy and fun, but I'm never confident that they will play well together. Bonnie has it as a free pattern. This is my away project. I meet in small groups to sew, and this is easy to do while talking and having fun. I have had it cut and kitted for a couple of years. So there are some oldies fabric in there.
