mystery solved

I had the quilting finished before we took off for Sauder rug hooking, so I worked on the binding in the car and motel. A finish. Old tobacco road is a free pattern at quiltville. Bonnie shared this pattern as a mystery quilt in 2008.  The wind last night makes picture taking a challenge. If I continue finishing her mystery quilts, I think Double delight is next. I am pretty sure, all it needs is a backing, binding and quilting.

I shared yesterday some pictures of rugs from the Sauder rug hooking week. We had a wonderful time getting away. Rug hooking is something that my husband and I can do together. As a matter of fact, this trip was for him to take a workshop with Donna Hrkman. I had bought this for him as a Christmas gift. Each year, the event posts the registration for the next year just before Christmas, I knew he would love this class and never do it for himself - gift giving solved. Last year, we had seen her work using the steam punk idea. This won people's choice.

This year Donna Hrkman won the sauder award with this beautiful wool rug - odd she is not in the picture.

 Her work is amazing

Jeff was making steam punkin and loved the class. I am thrilled with his work.

My Christmas rug

I haven't stretched my rug out for awhile to get a god look. It stays in the frame and I carry it back and forth from home to guild. Sometimes it lives in the car between excursions. I am always surprised how much is done, after working on small parts at a time.
We are at the "wlll I have enough background wool" stage. Which means, I need to hook in different spots a bit, so that if I have to add in a different wool, it will look like it has been in the whole border not just added in at the last minute , even if it is.

here are some photos of rugs from the Sauder Ohio rug week.

This display was from Kay Wilde in Kayesville Utah. I have a son and daughter in Utah, so, of course I was interested.

I really thought about this rug for my next project. It is by Karen Kahle. I like her work. But, I decided to concentrate on finishing a carpet bag that I already have at home.

I loved this rug. The detail work was sensational. It looks like a photograph on a scrapbook page. And it meant something to the artist. How wonderful is that?

Sauder rug hooking week

Our trip to Rug hooking week in Archbold Ohio was so interesting. I went thinking I was going to enjoy the vendors and the displays, but found learning was so much more fun. This display was a hoot. There was nothing politically correct about this rug artist.
James and Mercedes Hutchinson were husband and wife who commissioned rugs for a period of 20 years 1920s to 1950s. They designed the rugs together.

One of their rugs is for sale for 4800.00  or this one for 6875.00

I wonder if this was displayed in their home, just how lively was their  Thanksgiving family dinner.

I had occasion to want this rug for my own. enough said.
Every rug in the collection was so unique, but the colors and design were consistent.

This was an exceptionally hooked rug. The details were amazing.

On our way home, there was a storm and then this...

Everything should end with a rainbow..

wool from sauder rug hooking week

The wool I bought was luscious. I really am thrilled with buying swatches. Although they are small, they will be great for shading. Each swatch has 6 gradations, for subtle shading.
I needed red dot to transfer a pattern I have onto the rug warp I will be using.  And I have no plans for the bundle, but I just loved the colors together. I may never hook with it, but just leave it around the house as decoration :). I bought a short bolt of cream wool to dye. Dyeing wool is easy and fun. I tend to procrastinate, due to the mess, and the gathering from the four corners of the house of all the materials. But all the colors at Rug week really inspired me to try dip dyeing, and swatching. I have it on good authority, that I may be getting dye spoons for Christmas. Ho ho ho.
