5 quilts february 28, 2022

My 5 quilts progress report. I tried to not do this EVERY week (boring) but, it has worked to keep me focused. And, I miss it. I find I have been a little haphazard without it. I thought I would do it every month, but, I think I need to go back to every week to help me.

1.rainbow scrap challenge - color aqua/teal - boho heart. I worked on the blue/aqua blocks I needed for boho heart.

2.
full stop quilt that Angela is doing for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy.- I made the last row that I am adding letters to the punctuation. I didn't have a place large enough to show the whole row. Now I can lay it out at a sewing day and start evening the rows.

3. rhododendren mystery - hunter -   My big stumbling block was deciding if I wanted to just cut the bonus blocks from the last units, or, sew them as hsts before cutting. It took a little time to decide. But, I couldn't move on until
I did. I decided to sew and then, cut.

I made one block and realized I have to match the squares to the angled pieces - argh

4.I am trying to find the 5th ufo quilt to add to the list. I used a random number generator, and, it was my maypole blocks.  I used it again and it was my 5 star blocks - - Someone gave these to me a long time ago. So, they have been a ufo for a long time. I thought I would make additional blocks since there is a yard of the background fabric, and, make a small donation quilt, but, no. I think I will just put them in the orphan block box and deal with them when I want to make an orphan block quilt. We will try choosing again.

5. use a jelly roll - The top is finished and I am making the back and binding and adding it to the "to be quilted" pile.

MY  next on the longarm of my own quilts in the 'to be quilted' closet

1. row rainbow rsc -finished

2. gray baby flannel -finished

3. Pineapple blossom - hunter -need to find it -I found it -I am not going to quilt it yet, so I am moving it to the bottom of the list, if ever

4. Christmas sparkle- on the frame

5. shine

6. bricks in the barnyard

7. tiger, tiger

8. EPP green

stash report February 27, 2022

Yesterday was sew day at the library for our guild. I enjoyed spending the day talking and sewing. I did come home with some scrappy pieces on the free table. And I won the drawing for a fat quarter. I tried to resist....

On the left is my prize fat quarter. I am not sure why I grabbed the bright green piece, but it is nice and bright. I have a weakness for floral that I hope to do a floral quilt someday. And, 2 different quilters brought me their waste triangles. One time, I pulled a triangle from the trash and jokingly said - we shouldn't be so wasteful - there is so much you can do with this tiny piece. And, it became a tradition that they bring these to me. I have an overflowing shoebox full of them. And one day, I will do something with them. Haha

I was happy with what I got done, too.

 Stash report February 27, 2022

fabric added: .75 yards

fabric added year to date: 3.75 yards

I sewed 6 days last week. A whole day Saturday, which was a welcome chance to work on projects.

I am still working on my hexie project, adding the spacers for the next rosette.

aqua star and crown

This is the last Saturday of the month for the rainbow scrap challenge. I made the star and crown blocks in aqua. Again, I think some of them are just blue or green, but, they are the closest I could find in my civil war reproduction fabrics. Sprinkled in with the others they will be pretty. I think I have all the projects done in aqua.

Hopefully, I am at a guild sewing day today. I missed last month because of covid, but, I have a few projects I want to move along. I am thinking I will take full stop quilt and maybe another jelly roll quilt. Oh the possibilities.

jelly roll top

Happy Birthday to my oldest - such a blessing. I have no idea how he could be getting soooo old.

My last try at dart, and I was so close, I came home and finished the top. I need to decide about borders. The pattern doesn't have any, but, I am old school enough to think I need one on every quilt. So it is an inner fight.

For a simple jelly roll quilt, I had to scratch my head a few times.
As a reward, I made treats - double chocolate sourdough muffins - yum

If I make treats for every finish, like sewing a seam. I could be hundreds of pounds heavier in no time.

scraps time

I decided it was time to dig out another box of scraps and work on taming them. I adore my scraps and I almost feel guilty taking the time to play with them. But, it does create roadblocks to production if they aren't corralled from time to time. I had a low energy evening, a perfect time to sit and sort. This time I decided I wasn't cutting 10 inch squares until I have actually used them. I divided what was in the box into 2 piles. I had one pile of anything I thought would be at least 5 inches, and pieces that could be strips.

5 inch box

strip box

It took another evening to cut the 5 inch box. I was surprised at how many I cut. I didn't count but the stack is a little over 4 inches. They weighed 10 ounces = about 2 yards

This box of scraps was very wrinkled and most of the scraps needed a pressing. That is when I realized how much I depend on  my wool pressing mats. I own 3- one that is upstairs next to my sewing machine, one that is next to my treadle in the living room, and a small one in my sewing machine bag that I take to my group sews. Oh, and my ironing board in my sewing room is covered by a wool blanket. My hubby made it for me in 2017. I just feel the pressing is better on a wool mat.

My favorite tools for scraps

1. stripology ruler
4. wool pressing mats

dart progress in sections

Once I got this far with this quilt, I wanted to keep going. I started putting them together by color sections. I had a few I needed to correct the sizes on the ends. I tried marking the rows as I added them but, I would skip one and throw the next one off track. I made this during sew groups, so I was probably talking too much haha.

dart -a free pattern.

Hopefully by the end of the week I will have it together.

3 fat quarters 50 cents each

On the approved list to bring home this year, is purple, orange, and tiny print neutrals.

hunters star start

I ordered a new hunters star accuquilt die during the holidays. I decided for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy, I would cut 20 of each color this year, and maybe, sew them next year. I have plenty of projects this year,  ( and every future year of my life ), so it seemed prudent to just cut while the scraps are out and available. However, they have been mocking me as they sit in their little container. Just one, they say. What if you can't do it, they say.  Well...I can, and I like making them. I will probably sew them as leader/enders while I sew other projects. That means, fish school, and easy breezy will just have to wait.

I gave myself a pass last month since most of my red blocks were finished for boho heart. But, I have several aqua/blue blocks to make this month. I have a little problem with aqua. I think I see it as aqua until I put it with blue. sigh then it is just blue.

row by row quilt finish

As part of my rainbow scrap challenge goals for 2020, I bought a new pattern row x row. I worked on each color through the year. By the end of the year, I had all the rows sewn. I had the top ready in November of 2020. I really like how bright and happy it turned out finished.

I finished quilting and binding it for my February One monthly goal. It is 80 x 80 and all made with scraps.

22 yards

I used a blue sheet for the back and a stripe for the binding that I did on the sewing machine. I did free form  swirls for the quilting.

WIP progress

I am working on clue 6 of rhododendron trail mystery quilt from quiltville. I cut the yellow pieces from my 2 1/2 inch strip bin to size, but, I just used WOF, or close to that, of neutrals. They will naturally be cut to the right size when I subcut. That saved me one step.

I cut the red pieces too.

Another early morning and I might be ready to make a block.

I started sewing the  dart -a free pattern jelly roll quilt into rows at my Tuesday group. All the strips start the same and then, a different size piece is added to the right and the left to make it wave. There is a chart to follow, but, I can sure get turned around. fingers crossed

I used a skinny strip roll for the sashing

a jelly roll quilt

Happy valentine's day - I hope you have chocolate in your future.

My jelly roll project for January was to make a quilt from Jordan fabrics called dart -a free pattern.. I used an old moda jelly roll called bistro. I liked the colors and wanted to remove it from my stash. There was a garage sale sticker on it, so I must have found it thrifting. I don't remember it at all.

It didn't take long to cut the pieces.

does this look like a whole quilt?

This first steps were easy and all the same. I was able to lay it out at the library and decide the color sequence. But, then, there was covid and I didn't finish it for January.

Time to focus a bit on this quilt and move it along. I am taking it with me as a portable project anytime I am sewing away from home. I have a group sew tomorrow. I can use the time to work on it.

I sewed 5 days last week.

I have filled a small box of soap sacks for the rescue mission in town. I spent one evening attaching the labels and adding the soap. I have 26, but, my daughter had 250. I have a few more odd skeins of cotton yarn, I might make some more.  Luckily someone sent me a link for the homeless initiative https://www.soapsacks.com/

spring blossoms

It's almost Spring... ok we have 6 inches of snow on the ground and the temps are in the teens, BUT, Spring is coming.

I have aqua blossom time blocks done for the month of February and the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I had hoped for 12 but the final count was ...11 sigh...

It is time to prune the grapevines. We haven't taken care of them for several years. Time for maple sugar season. And I hope we prune the apple tree. I am ready for Spring.

baby flannel quilt finish

I have a jelly roll finish for a child. it was a flannel  jelly roll I found on sale. I used 20 for the inside portion. I wanted it a bit larger so I added borders. I made this on the treadle in 2020

It is 47 x 66. I used an all over stipple for the quilting.

I used a dark blue flannel for the back and a light weight batting  since it is flannel.

I machine sewed the binding. I wish I had cut it larger, there is a lot of bulk with flannel. I hope someone will enjoy how cozy it is. And another jelly roll is gone.

soothing sewing

I just needed a little light sewing. It's easy to pick up some of my "growing" projects and just sew. I don't have to look for anything or read the instructions or scratch my head. And my pile "grows". I sure like sewing with shirt material. It feels so nice.

anvil block

more easy breezy blocks

I need goals and plans, but, sometimes I just need some meditation sewing. I enjoy picking up 2 pieces of fabric and sending them through the machine.
