5 quilts December 12, 2022

 last report 5 quilts November 16 , 2022

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another.

1. rhododendren mystery - Bonnie hunter -

finished 12/22

2. Boho heart - it is quilted waiting on binding

3. dotty bow ties-  all the blocks are done and first sashing on them

4. circa 1880-  More about this here.  no progress

5 - frolic mystery - back and binding - re-ironed - frame  finished  11/22

Making a 5 quilts report has been good for staying on track and finishing, but, I am bored with how long it takes to finish, and, I can't find stuff and keep it straight anymore.  I have a few concerns.

maybe one at a time would be better? but would I get any others done?

I decided to keep the list, but, work on one at a time.

Rhododendron was my first experiment. I finished it in 8 days including quilting. That was great and helped with motivation. And as long as I had a list item per day. I wasn't bored.

Mystery quilt finish

This quiltville mystery quilt has had it's share of mystery. I lost the blocks for Rhododendron mystery quilt after they were all made. Luckily, with a little sleuthing, they were found, and I decided to add this quilt to my 5 quilts goals. In November, the top was ready for borders, but, the corner pieces were missing. It was ready for quilting by Thanksgiving. I made this my December one monthly goal. If I wanted to make the new mystery - Chilhowie, I needed to finish this one.

90 x106

25 yards

I pieced a pink and floral backing and used the sashing fabric for the binding. I quilted free motion swirls on my longarm. I still have grassy creek to finish to be current with the mystery quilts. All my quiltville mystery quilts are here.

rhododendron progress

It has been soooo cold here this past weekend, and we are still recovering from covid. There was nothing to do but work on rhododendron mystery quilt from last year.

I added inner and outer borders. I may change the cornerstones. I could not find the ones I made during the mystery. And I didn't want to be creative. I wanted it done.

I made the back from a sheet and a leftover pink piece from another back. It was almost to much math for me.

I even cut and made the binding. I can see the end in sight. I have a customer quilt to finish, and, then, I am going to put this quilt on the frame. I have pushed this one a little harder, thinking I can't start another mystery until this one is done.  I am still deciding if I am going to make another mystery. It's a hard decision for me. I have made them all and I like the colors this year, but, I have so many UFOs, I should not add another. I still have 5 days to decide. Any one making Chilhowie?

5 quilts 11/16

last report 5 quilts October 31 , 2022

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another.

1. rhododendren mystery - Bonnie hunter - the top center is together. And I did get brave enough to trim.

2. Boho heart - I have finished a small section of group 3

3. I am working on the sashings of dotty bow ties.  The bow tie blocks are made. I am slowly adding a sashing to the center of each block, 10 at a time. All of the blocks are made, but, I am short a few. Do I make more or make the quilt smaller .....hmm

4. circa 1880-  More about this here. All the rows are sewn together that I have made.

5. scrappy twirl  - finished - hooray

new number 5 - frolic mystery - back and binding - re-ironed - frame

rhododendron is pieced

With just a little bit of fall weather, I took the chance to take a photo outside of Rhododendron mystery quilt, ready for borders. I really am uncomfortable cutting the edge off a quilt. So, I will have to work up the courage. Next, is a turquoise inner border and a pieced outer border. So glad to have this almost done, before the new mystery starts in November. The real mystery is, where did I put the turquoise fabric?

The nasturtiums are still alive.

5 quilts October 31, 2022

And just like that- October is over. My goodness, it was fast. I have had a swollen sore thumb and have not felt like sewing for a week. It will be 3 weeks before the hand doctor can see me. That gives me a time line. One or two days before the appointment, it will be miraculously cured. haha

Someone suggested that I move, a quilt to be quilted, into the 5 quilts, and, I thought it was a brilliant idea, so, I will drop the rainbow scrap challenge as part of 5 quilts.

circa rows

I had a wonderful sew day with my quilt guild. We met at the library and had a pitch in lunch - yummy

I worked on three projects. I have started making blocks for dotty bow ties ( I need 80), And, I added the third row to rhododendron mystery quilt. Then, I could settle in, and sew triangles to squares until I was too tired to go any further.

I made 2 more rows  and sewed them to the top. I didn't get a picture after I sewed them together circa 1880 was a swap I participated in with my quilty friends.

1. Rainbow scrap challenge- light blue - I have been adding a few zipper blocks as I go along  with the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy.

3. Boho heart -Two more blocks made for section 2

4. I started dotty bow ties. The blocks are all ready. I cut what I need for the idea of sashing I am planning. I may need to cut more if my math is wrong.

5. circa 1880- I needed more triangles for the blocks and decided to add kona snow for the alternate color. I had a 6 yard piece and surely that will be enough to finish this top.  The last time I worked on this was in 2020.

5 quilts: September 4, 2022

 5 quilts last report August 22, 2022

1. Rainbow scrap challenge- light blue

I needed one more candy block to have all the blocks done for this years project. All the colors are done. I decided on a chocolate candy. I am just going to sew them in rows for a fun charity quilt.

2. rhododendren mystery - hunter - I am working on a row with a set of 4

3. Boho heart -I have the next line of 3 blocks made for section 2

4. maple leaves - this one is ready for the "to be quilted" closet.

It is time for a new project to take it's place. When the new quiltville leader/ ender challenge was announced, I decided to work on my previous starts of leader/ender challenges instead ( so far). I could go back to the very first one and find it as an UFO. Bonnie did cheddar bow ties,  I started dotty bow ties. I didn't need many to make my goal, so, the blocks are all ready. I just need to decide on a layout and start assembly.

5. fair and square - the top is finished. I just need a back and binding before sending it to the pile of unquilted tops.

New 5. I have decided on a UFO that was part of a swap with quilty friends. circa 1880 I have a few rows already done and I realize that I don't have enough of the original backing that I bought for the quilt, so, I had to work that out in my head. I think I can begin again. The last time I worked on this was in 2020.

rhododendron mystery progress

I have been working on the easy short rows of the rhododendron mystery. I have the top left 3 rows together. And, now, the bottom right 2 rows together.

And Saturday I finished the 3rd bottom right row. I have been making the long sashing rows as leader/ enders as I work on my 5 quilts or the rainbow scrap challenge projects. It makes it seem like it is going quickly.

I have a binding to attach, some scraps to cut, and a section of boho heart quilt to sew.

We have our fingers crossed that this pumpkin plant will have a pumpkin in time this year. It had a slow start and is in no hurry.

mystery quilt

I am finally plugging along on the missing rhododendron mystery quilt. I am still not sure I have the  hourglass blocks turned right. So far. it is fitting together pretty well. I can still see some staining, but, the worse parts are gone. The staining effected the setting triangles the most. I soaked them in a solution of dawn dish soap and a color catcher in my kitchen sink, just to see if it was going to work. I made sure they were not touching each other. I swished the water around them gently from time to time. It took about an hour, and then, I could see a difference. I spent the day getting them soaked. I did use the spin cycle in my washing machine to wring them out, and I hung them to dry.

I added row 3

I sure never thought, I would do an inch sashing in a quilt. It isn't as fiddly as I thought it would be. The long hard rows are still ahead, but, little by little it will get finished. I may not iron any of it, until, I can wash it again. I don't want to set the stains.

I still have violets growing, and thyme, and coreopsis.

just a bit cute added to my garden

5 quilts August 22, 2022

 last  report August 5th

1. Rainbow scrap challenge - orange- playing catch up on my star and crown blocks in purple. I don't think I will be making any of these blocks for the orange month, although, I haven't looked in my stash. There may be a cheddar or a smokey orange. We will see.

2. rhododendren mystery - hunter -    I have found the blocks. But that is another story here. I soaked and washed the stained blocks, and, I have started with the short rows. I am having a hard time with the directional blocks.

it's a beginning

3. Boho heart -Nothing new here. I am at a part that intimidates me. I can't just pick up something and quickly sew it together, so I procrastinate.

4. maple leaves - I found a fabric I liked for another border, but, there wasn't enough for a big border. I found a back, and, I am looking for the binding fabric.

yellow is always a good choice

5. fair and square -The top is pieced and ready for borders. The borders are made with 2 inch squares. I have 2 borders almost pieced. I will add to them after I add the inner border.

MY  next on the longarm of my own quilts in the 'to be quilted' closet.
