charity quilts

Our guild met on Saturday to sew quilts for charity. We donate to the police department for trauma children and for healthy families  and education. One of our members had her Florida guild do these large tumblers for their donation quilts and she wanted us to try them as well. We cut one Saturday and made kits. And this Saturday, we sewed the kits together for a quilt.

Maris made 2 ahead of time.

More fabric trickling in the house. I won the drawing for show and tell at quilt guild.

Fabric Used year to Date: 129 yards

Fabric Added this week: 1.5 yards

I stitched at least 15 minutes every day this week. and made significant progress on sea swept.

I didn't go to rug hooking guild last week. I stayed home to longarm, since I have a few last minute quilters getting ready for our quilt show October 1st. They have these puppy dog eyes when they ask if I can get it done in time. What little progress I made on the sheep project was at home. I bought this chair pad kit at a quilt showI look forward to adding to this as my slow stitching project today.

triangles

I have a new infusion of scrap triangles to work with in the future. My Friday group donated these lovely scraps to me and there are many aqua and teals in the bunch. That will have to do this week for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy.

treasures

The bag on the right is from my Linda friend's sea swept quilt which is done, which I quilted last week, while I am still piecing mine.

Otherwise, I am making little bits as I get bored with the bigger bits of piecing.

more carolina chaining

I did the top 5 rows of carolina chain earlier. and now, I have assembled the bottom 5 rows. They are the easiest and shortest so of course, I wanted to do them first.

the setting triangles are dark blue

I cut Carolina chain in 2017. It is from the the book addicted to scraps by Bonnie Hunter. It was also in the quilltmaker  magazine, June/ July 2010.

I have been using easy breezy 1 1/2 inch squares for the leader/ender project this week. I am having more trouble picking out of a bag of 1 1/2 inch squares to make sets, than I am sewing them.

sparkle redo

I had finding a back on my list for this Christmas Sparkle quilt. When I did the math, I was surprised just how big it was. I had been " encouraged" to add another row and a border to it by my Quilty friends. It didn't look so big at the library where I laid it on the floor, but in a home it was huge 110 inches long. I really don't want another Christmas quilt that big, so, I cut off the bottom row again, and I am putting it together as a smaller quilt.

I had the borders already on the quilt, so I spent time taking them off the bottom along with the last row, so that, I can put it back on the smaller version.

Our guild has a quilt show in October and I am busy quilting for the last minute crowd, it slows my own preparation a bit.

I did a few leader / ender go fish too

I still haven't figured the best way to use them leader/ender

snails trails

Hooray ! I started assembly of my sea swept quilt at my Friday quilt group. The left 4 snails trails are sewn together but, the rest are only webbed together to check and secure placement. It is really cool. I came home, and I am doing some of the pinning watching TV in the evening.

meanwhile, I am back to sewing easy breezy blocks but using 1 1/2 inch squares and strips as leader/enders while sewing other blocks.

stash report August 22, 2021

I had to buy fabric to recut  the diamonds for sea swept. I bought 2 yards of kona snow from Joann fabrics. And, I nearly used all of it. Those blocks are done and I am starting the assembly of the quilt.

I stitched at least 15 minutes every day this week.

I have been working on a new rug hooking project. I bought this chair pad kit at a quilt show. I am hoping to hook mats for my dining room chairs. This size project I can also take to rug guild meetings as a portable project. I will use this as my slow stitching project today.

a few tiny houses

I can't believe this all I have ready for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy this week.

tiny houses in a square

I did get the purple semi colons done for the full stop quilt that Angela is doing.

I have been working on sea swept and quilting ode to Joey. And the garden is in need of attention. We have tomatoes to can. We are dehydrating some, but, I will need to can.  I did "harvest" some elderberries from our woods and near our church. It takes a lot to make even a tincture. So, I press forward what I can with my quilting. Hubby is still recovering from hip replacement but is up more than down. So grateful

more sea swept

My finish for the week is all the diamonds for my sea swept quilt are done. They haven't been trimmed in the picture, but, I am ready to start the assembly today at our quilt group. I made 10 a day after coming home, and, I finished trimming yesterday.

I am so glad to move this forward after the debacle of last week and the wrong size diamonds

new shirt project

Part of my stress reliever project for retreat was just sewing 4 patches out of shirts. I started with 2 1/2 inch strips in dark and light and sewed  a bunch whenever I needed to destress in between sea swept.

I'd sew strips for awhile, and, then, subcut them and sew four patches. I was doing just dark and light.

I have one pattern that uses these as frames around a center block. I needed 32 for the sides and a larger set for the top and bottom.  I did get the 32 sewn. I have a few ready for the rest of the blocks.

My friends like to drop their scraps off at my table. I like just about anything. Here was my little pile.

I picked these 2 fat quarters as a prize when my name was drawn. I don't have much grunge.

sink or swim at retreat

Oh my - my retreat story. I just couldn't find a project to work on except my sea swept quilt. And I was closing in on finishing all the blocks I would need. But, I thought it would just take a couple of hours. Silly me, thinking I needed another project.  Just as I finished sewing 388 triangles to 97 diamonds, and began to trim them, Someone asked me what I was making. So I showed her my snails trail blocks and how this was the sashing.   And, Oh no,  they were too small for the block. I had chosen the wrong size on the template. aack and phooey. It took a minute.... or two  to decide this block was not going to defeat me.

all for another quilt someday

Luckily, I had used Kona snow for the background. I only had a 6 inch strip left. I ran to Joann fabrics and bought another 2 yards. And I cut the diamonds again in the bigger and hopefully right size.

97 diamonds

But at this point I had used all my optimism and wanted to work on something else. So I mindlessly sewed 2 1/2 inch shirt pieces for 4 patches. Am I getting too confused to quilt? etc. Maybe but, I will go out making mistakes if that is what it takes. So, I wanted to at least get the triangles cut before I went home for the night. Luckily, I still had batiks to use for the triangles.

tada- 388 cut

Big difference

This time, I decided I would make 10 a day until I made them all.  I was to retreat bright eyed and bushy tailed. And made the first 10. That wasn't so bad.

big difference again. How did I make such a mistake?

By the time I went home, I had 50 made. whew

stash report August 15, 2021

I indulged in a  moda scrap bag. I enjoy the mystery. This one was funny, mostly civil war reproduction fabrics and... a 4 brights. But, I will use all of them, if, I live long enough.

I stitched at least 15 minutes every day this week. And I had 2 days of retreat sewing - fun

One of the ladies at retreat was working on quilting her hexie quilt. She made the backing 7 inches bigger and then folded it under the hexies for a border. It looked great and was just what I needed for an idea for my EPP diamond quilt. I have had that on my mind, looking for a way to finish the edges. I hope to get it out and make plans today. If I do it this way, I want to hand stitch it down, not machine stitch it down.

crumb stars

I had fun digging in the scrap bag for aqua crumbs. I knew I wanted to make crumb stars this week and with the color of aqua. Aqua is the color of the month for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I was able to make 9 centers and then, 9 blocks.

I found all of these crumbs in the crumb and string bins. I had cleaned them all into one place as we prepared for company. I was afraid, if I broke them out of hiding, a mess would ensue. But, I think I outsmarted it.

I am off to a retreat this weekend, and I had a disaster that I will have to tell about later. But, it is ok.

quilt top ready

In an effort to make it longer than wider, I added wonky stars to the top and bottom of my ode to Joey quilt, and, now, it is a top. I have a large flannel  wide back for the back and a multicolored binding sewn together. I made this for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. And, now, it lives in the "to be quilted" closet annex.  I have a 'sleep in your own bed" retreat this weekend. I haven't even decided what I am taking to work on while I am there. I have a Christmas quilt that needs a back pieced, but, blah. I will get up and see what suits my fancy.  I am taking sea swept with me but, think I will have it done in a couple of hours.

more go fish

For the go fish leader/ender challenge from quiltville, I have more fishies cut and ready to sew together. I look forward to seeing how they will look. I still have to look at one of them I have done to be sure I get the angles right. I am sure by the time I finish a gazillion hsts, I will get them right through practice.

Such a fun block to make. And I hope to empty my 2 1/2 inch squares bin, too. After I cut them, I can leave them for awhile and still get back to them later.

chaining

It is time to move Carolina chain along to the next step. I cut the setting triangles from scrappy blues.

And, now, I am going to join the rows a few at a time, and, there is a lot of matching and pinning to be done. I have the rows sewn together.  I really like seeing the dark and light chains start to form. This is a Bonnie Hunter pattern from her book addicted to scraps.

I bought these through missourri star quilt. I don't have any neutral colored batiks and the charm packs were so pretty.

I stitched at least 15 minutes every day this week. I am back to sewing in the mornings before breakfast.

Last week I showed some soap sacks that I was crocheting. I made another one on Sunday. Luckily someone sent me a link for the homeless initiative https://www.soapsacks.com/

it looks lonely by itself

I think I will talk to the rescue mission this week to see if they would even accept this and give me a starting number. I can get 2 out of every skein of cotton yarn plus a leftover piece.
