string geese

Last weekend, I worked at my treadle, and, finished my shirt string piecing. I am working toward Bonnie Hunter's geese on a string quilt in her book string frenzy. After the blocks were finished, I went back to the book, and realized I had made a mistake. In one part, Bonnie says to cut phone book papers 7 1/4 inches. In a different part, she says to cut them diagonally. I didn't read that part, apparently.

I cut them after they were pieced, so all the geese won't have the strips going in one direction. I don't have a problem with wonky geese, I guess. That's better than a redo. I am putting this project away for a little bit, as I have other more pressing priorities.

to do: brag about my friends

My Friday group meets at the library. There are 3 of us, that meet regularly, and, we have another 5 that comes many times, but, off and on. They are all very talented, and approach quilting differently. That's why I enjoy it so much. I just like to make quilts. I may not have a reason to make one or a plan on what I am going to do with it. I may have several projects going at the same time, and, I tend to bounce around from project to project. I quilt my own quilts on a longarm. I prefer big quilts with an outdated notion that a quilt is for a bed. Linda is more organized, and just likes to make quilts too. She has a limited number going at the same time, and stays more focused until she finishes them. She doesn't do her own quilting and is not afraid of big quilts. She keeps me busy doing her quilting for her.

She and I were part of a swap that made these uneven 9 patches.

Linda's circa 1880

Chris still works, and joins us as often as she can. She makes smaller quilts and donates many of them. She quilts some of her own quilting on a domestic machine. This one, she has asked me to quilt for her.

Chris 's universe quilt

Shelley makes one quilt at a time, from start to finish. And, she makes them as gifts for specific young people, nieces and nephews. And sometimes, she doesn't have a project to start. She makes lap size, and quilts them herself on a domestic machine. She doesn't make quilts at home, but just in a group.

Shelley's baby quilt for a great nephew

This is my version of circa 1880, which is not nearly as far along as Linda's, but, it's a start. I am glad Linda and Sue started before me, as, they have worked out the kinks, and been very helpful. I am not working on this at home, yet. It is a project I am saving for group.

my circa progress

Last week, I mentioned that I needed to clean my cutting table, and I did. But, the piles have already begun. haha

I haven't seen this much table in a long while

rug matters

Tomorrow will be my rug hooking meeting, and, I haven't posted much of what is going on there. I really enjoy watching the progress of my fellow hookers as they work on their projects. We have 2 new members, and it is fun to watch them get "hooked". Diane had a finish she shared.

This is just a piece of a large rug.

It's hard to tell, but, the blue is the sky, the green is the grass, and the middle is sheep and red flowers.

On a quilting note, I have made a few more stars with the bloc loc template set.

stash report: September 27, 2020

I can't believe it is the end of September already. Besides having too much fabric, it's time to see what my stash report would be.

I was very fortunate to receive a gift of fabric from someone cleaning their closets. It was a magical bundle of fun.

Stash report  September 2020

Fabric Used this week: 32 yards -

Fabric Used year to Date: 300.25 yards

Fabric Added this week: 31 yards
Fabric Added Year to Date: 148.75 yards
net fabric: 151.5 yards used more than bought

I sewed at least 15 minutes per day

This is all I have left of the center background of my snowman rug, to hook. It is getting very close. I need to decide on the border, and get started on plans on how I want to finish it.

red irish chain block

The red blocks for my Irish chain quilt are ready, and, all I need are the yellows. I have worked on this quilt over the last two years for the rainbow scrap challenge. The first year, I did the 4 patches, and, this year, I am making the blocks.

This was a friend Linda's quilt - smith mountain morning -in red and brown. We took the Bonnie hunter class together in Lafayette. Mine was gray and yellow. I quilted hers in red.

I have started putting the joining the rainbow row x row quilt, and finished the 2nd red row.

blue 9 patch finish

This quilt began as a challenge this year from my daughter. She had too many 2 1/2 inch strips, and wanted to make a quilt with them. I had a blue 2 1/2 inch strip drawer that I couldn't close. She suggested a race. I talked about racing my daughter using 2 1/2 inch strips here.

We finished in June. Check here to see who won. I have been waiting for an opening on the longarm to do the quilting. I finished it last week and added the binding this week.

I used 3 large pieces of blue fabrics from my stash for the back. This is truly a scrappy quilt using up stash. I am so thankful my daughter motivated me, and, played along with me.

Here is my start here.
And more about  the quilt blocks here and here.

This will be part of my phd 20

norwegian snowflakes quilt

I started cutting and piecing Norwegian snowflake in July  on my treadle. It is a complicated idea to set up, but, easy to piece. It uses a lot of blue 2 inch scraps. And there are a lot of pieces. The pattern is a grid like block. I had three sets of 4 to make a big block, and I was anxious to see how it will look.

It is a quilted twins free pattern, called norwegian snowflakes, I found here. There are 4 blocks in each quadrant, and, 4 quadrants in a block, and, 9 blocks in the quilt. I really like it. I am excited I used a combination of white based and cream based neutrals. I think it adds something to the quilt. I did realize, I should have been trimming earlier in the process. I waited until it was a quarter of a block, and, I felt that I had to compromise the squares too much. I am grateful that it doesn't have to match up with another block, it just uses sashings. Hopefully that will hide my inaccuracies.

This is going to be fun. But, I am sneaking this in, even when, I have other quilts that I need to finish, and a large batch of customer quilts to get ready in time for the holidays. In the beginning of the pandemic, there were no customer quilts, but, they are making up for it now. I did get more of my quilts done.

to do: shine

I'm still playing catch up from last week. I finished the last Shine blocks that, I had missed during the rainbow scrap challenge.

I had started purple psp 20 blocks and needed to finish them.

It's fall in Indiana. There is a certain blue to our sky that I love. I like the temperatures, but, not the shortening of the day. Hubby has been busy finishing the tomatoes and peppers. And we have another batch of salsa ahead of us. I saw a cute idea for a pumpkin this year, and, we went in search of the perfect pumpkin.

shirt strings

I used to set aside the weekend for sewing string and crumbs at my treadle. But, after finishing 2 wonky courthouse tops, my living room was a disaster of a mess. I was trying to give up string quilting, but, alas, I miss it. And, I will begin again with the same promises I make to myself, that I will always clean up as I go. haha -I had cut papers for Bonnie Hunter's geese on a string in early Spring. I am making more shirt strings and crumbs as I cut for other projects, and they looked so inviting. I rummaged and found my big bag of shirt pieces, too small or too ugly, for a quilt.

There is something comfy and cozy about shirt fabric.

And, another string project has started.

This was a good start on a new project.

postage stamp red

Little tiny squares and I are having fun in red for the rainbow scrap challenge. Some of the blocks turn out better than others. I don't know if they were not cut accurately or I get in a hurry and sew them too quickly. It's hard to be patient. Each block is different and interesting in it's own way, and, I want to see it.

I was able to sew the red row for the row x row. I have only yellow to go. I plan on putting the rows together soon. I can hardly wait. The rainbow scrap challenge is a favorite of mine. It keeps me motivated and inspired, but, it is a lesson in patience. I am more of a hare in my real life, and the rainbow challenge is more of a turtle kind of thing.

And, then, I have two more psp20 blocks

I had an idea to try the waffle blocks. Using the smaller scraps. This makes a great leader/ender patch for in between the lines. But, they are small.

fall finish

I rarely manage to finish a topical quilt in time for any season. This year, I have finished patriotic quilts in time for July 4th, and, now, a fall quilt in time for fall. I must admit, that when I decide which quilts, in my personal blacklog, I am going to quilt, I start with the smallest or the easiest.

I started this one in November 2018 as a mystery quilt at my carolina home. Carole from from My Carolina home offered a quilt along mystery called autumn jubilee.  I worked on it  here and here

I used a flannel sheet from the thrift store for the back. It seemed cozy enough for a fall quilt. It measures 56 x 68.

I managed to quilt at least 2 spiderwebs just for fun.

This quilt will be part of my One monthly goal and phd20

new basket

I found this little beauty at suzies scraps here. I really like her blog for inspiration. I used her ideas for a broken dishes block hereand her tile block here.
I was really excited to find another way to use the quirky "trash" triangles I have in a box. and it is so cute. It is also another great way to use older scraps that are not nearly as modern. Although, all fabric trends repeat over time.

I put them together like a 9 patch. Right now, I have a bunch of 2 1/2 inch squares cut in cream. When I use those I might make the plain 2 squares into a single piece. I like making these better than wonky stars.

to do: catch up

I didn't get this purple group of blocks posted last month, during purple at the rainbow scrap challenge. These blocks are part of my rainbow irish chain, that, I have been adding to each month since last year. Last year, I made the 4 patches, and, this year, I am making the bigger block. I was inspired by this quilt.

There have been several months that I did not need to work on it, as the colors for the month were not in my quilt. As we get closer to the finish ( I only need yellow), I am wondering how a scrappy version would look.

shoo shoo

I have more shoofly blocks finished. I have at least 100 of these, and, my goal is 160. At this point, most of my corners are cleanups, and, not necessarily matching. All my favorite sets have been made, and, I am trying to use the last of the hsts. I am not wasting any of them. Once I trimmed a gazillion 1 1/2 inch hsts, I wasn't about to let them go to the infinite string/ crumb bucket of shame.

I, occasionally, add an easy breezy little block as a leader /ender, just to see how it looks. Since my Linda friend gave me a big bag of 1 1/2 inch squares, I have had great choices from which to choose.
