hourglass QAL

Judy at small quilts and doll quilts was showing a vintage hourglass quilt made with 2 1/2 inch hourglasses that inspired her to make one, too. I remembered I have hourglasses tucked away in the ufo closet. I wasn't sure just what I had, but, I do remember there was some swapping involved.

My original inspiration was found in a book sew scrappy volume 2, and, I started making blocks. I invited 2 others to swap. The other swappers wanted to make a 4 1/2 inch unfinished size. That is why I have 2 sizes. We used mostly scrappy fabrics. It was added to the ufo closet in 2018

Recalculating for my 3 1/2 inch size, I would need 672 - I have 250 - I will definitely need to make more.

or I could make it 15 x 18 and I would need 270. and it would be a small donation quilt.

I don't want to add to the larger size. I have 132- 4 1/2 inch. I could make 11 across and 12 rows = 132 would be 44 x 45 quilt for donation before borders. That could work for me.

Looking at my picture and Judy's picture, I wish I had used reproduction fabrics. That would motivate me to start a new one. Sometimes, when I want to make a quilt, I have to figure out, what about it, is the reason. Is it the color, the block, the challenge, or the availability of fabric ( use up scraps)

The question is how could I join the qal and stick it in with my plans. I have more deciding to do.

anvil monthly goal finish

My one monthly goal for November was to make the 80 blocks I needed for an older ufo - anvil blocks. When I opened the project box, I had complete 50 blocks. I spent November trying to do a massive cleanup for my daughter's visit, so, I went easy on the choice of my goal. And, I made it.

80 blocks

While, I was auditioning sashing fabrics. I decided on this vintage print. I've changed my mind twice. And this is as far as I went with that. I have decided to finish it, and hope, I will have it done by the end of the year. This is part of my 5 quilt projects.

some of the blocks have sashings added to them as well.

full stop for quilting

I am pretty excited to add full stop quilt from 2021 rainbow scrap challenge to my longarm for quilting. I added the quilt to my 5 quilts in 2022 to assemble the blocks and then rows. I am not sure how it has gone this long being passed over in the quilt cue. But, I think it is time. full stop were quilt blocks that Angela designed.

sweet pea finish

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Sweet pea quilt is finished and checked off the UFO list, thanks to the 5 quilt project. I took a class in 2017 with marianne fons using their sweet pea block. It was great class, and, I enjoyed her as a teacher. I used a fat quarter bundle that had a jelly roll, too. I had most of the blocks made, when the project went into the dark abyss of Ufo land.

I added it to my 5 quilts in October. I decided on the setting. I added sashings. And, I had a atop in November. It was a quick turnaround for this older UFo.

5 quilts November 20, 2023

 Last report October 23, 2023

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another.

I have made some progress this past month. Each project has moved further along. This time of year, I am not as excited about the projects. The 5 quilt project has helped me stay on track and complete more than I had hoped. I have officially, not started any new projects this year, and, that has been hard. It is hard for me to find inspiration if I can't get all giddy about a new project. Although, with an aging memory, most of the UFOs are almost like new haha.

1.. strip tease pattern- I have begun rows. I will make 4 before I start the top. I have to find clever ways to motivate me to match all the seams. Christmas movies to the rescue.

2.. spoolin around leader ender challenge 2013 - The spools top is finished. I really like it and plan for it to be on my bed for awhile after the Christmas quilt is put away.

3. mini churndash - I have faithfully made a block a day since I pulled it out of the ufo closet. And I have an idea, now, on how I want to make the quilt. I want to mix my batch of 6 inch churndashes in and eliminate that ufo at the same time. So, this will be the first 5 quilt project of 2024.

A good quilty Lucy friend gave me a few mini churn dash blocks, so, that I can have her in my quilt, too. I love what she did. Her blocks always make me smile.

4. shirt anvil - My goal for November was to finish all 80  blocks. I am nearly there.

love the shirt fabric
5.  sweet pea - The top is ready for quilting. woohoo I have added it to the to be quilted closet and will drop it off the list

New number 2.  patriotic sail boat. I used a random number generator to pick this UFO. But, I am not thrilled with finishing this.

kit I purchased long ago

new number 5. Hollow nine that I have been making along with the rainbow scrap challenge this year.

MY  next on the longarm of my own quilts in the 'to be quilted' closet.

1. old world mystery - frame, basted, quilting,

2. full stop punctuation

3. cheddar jubilee

more lucky stars

I had my lucky star blocks sorted into rows by color of the stars. The next step was to make sure the sashings were turned the right way, and, as evenly distributed as I could get them. I spent the day at an open sew making rows.

Linda friend was doing the same with her reproduction stars.

I have a few rows sewn together- getting closer.

spoolin around finish

My spoolin around quilt is finished. spoolin around was the second quiltville leader/ ender challenge in 2013.  I opened the UFO box in August to find all the blocks in groups of four. I discovered that some of the blocks were not pieced right, so, I redid the majority of blocks. I had the center pieced by the end of September. I had the top ready to quilt the end of October. This is my 25th ufo finish this year and part of my 5 quilts project. I added it to the list when the new leader/ ender challenge was announced. I did the same thing last year and finished dotty bow ties

91 x 100 = 25 yards

Finding a good time to take pictures in the fall is a challenge. There is either no sunshine or windy. We drug it all over our place looking for the right spot. Even, had the little weed stickies on the back LOL

monkey wrench blocks

Before mini churn dashes, I was making monkey wrench blocks. These cute blocks are 5 1/2 inches unfinished. The project stalled when I decided to make a half square quilt next year. I started saving any leftover hsts for the new quilt. But, I want to get started again.

Our guild we care tree was auctioned off for 1500.00 and bought by the American legion post.

I found more neutrals while deep decluttering near my treadle sewing machine -which I still use. I hope to close it up for awhile and keep the sewing mess confined to the upstairs. I will miss sewing on it in the evenings.

I am trying to do a big clean up of the living room. I didn't knit any this week, but, I did play a little with some scraps. sew fun - I used 1 1/2 inch squares as my leader/enders and then made these quick blocks from the scraps on my table

lucky star colors

I had the opportunity at open sew to lay out all the lucky star blocks in an attempt to distribute the colors. The only colors I was focusing on, are the the colors of the stars. I didn't have time to organize the sashing colors. But, I have all the rows together in star order. Next time, I will sit, and, turn the sashings in the right order.

Every year, for years, our community has sponsored decorated Christmas trees. The trees are sold at auction, and, the money is donated to We care charity for Christmas charity giving. At this point, mostly businesses can afford to buy the trees and display them at their businesses. Our guild charity chairman decided to try We care this year for our guild. This year is the guild's first participation in sponsoring a tree. Here is my picture of it on display at the mall. It looks great. The chairman valued the tree at 4,000.00. There are many donations and contributions to our "tree". The trees will be auctioned on November 12th. We will see if anyone wants a quilty Christmas.

Barbie was a big theme this year, I saw 5 trees all decked out with pink and Barbie. I didn't take many pictures. I was busy looking.

sailboat start

I pulled out another UFO that I want to add to my 5 quilts list. It was a kit that I bought some time ago. It looks very easy. Everything is already there, and, all I have to do, is sew a bit. It could be fun. On the other hand, it does not need to be done. There are way too many ufos that are a higher priority.

Oh well, it is great for social sewing. It doesn't take up much room in the bag, can easily be sewed in my usual locations, especially with my non- scrappy quilting friends. Sew... I started by just cutting the 2 1/2 inch strips for the four patches.

anvil blocks and one monthly goal

A new addition to the 5 quilts project is an UFO from not so long ago. I like making these blocks. I saw these blocks on Beth Shibley's youtube channel, and, wanted to make them with my shirting fabric.

When I opened the box, I found 50 blocks are complete, and, I wanted to have 80. I have 10 or more blocks cut and ready to piece. So, this month, as my one monthly goal, I want to cut and make the 30 more blocks I will need for a quilt. Here is where it gets tricky. I don't have a plan for a finished quilt. I was just happily sewing blocks.

off hand, here are some options for plain sashings

I don't know, yet.
