rug hooking

The bottom right of my Cleveland rug is done and I am finishing up the little bits on the bottom left.

And this string frenzy book came from walmart to live at my house. I ordered it online when the first 500 sold out at Quiltville, and I knew I would not make any of the "announcements" in time.

Two weeks ago, I taught a feather tree class and we had a finish. It is so cute in person. I was so proud of her.

orca bay webbed

I have the orca bay mystery quilt webbed together in quadrants. I quickly ran outside to take pictures before the snow. I was hoping to study the pictures to see if I could find the mistakes before I quilted them into the quilt.

It didn't work. It wasn't until I took the pieces to the sewing machine, that I noticed many of the pesky cornerstones were turned the wrong way. And when one was turned, the whole row was wrong. This makes a strong case for webbing the quilt together in smaller chunks.

It's still hard to tell, but, I think I am going to like it.

Even though I didn't finish the mystery quilts, I did start the new mystery - Good fortune. Who could resist tiny 4 patches.

I am making progress on the letters I am making for the border of the fish jar quilt.
Any guesses yet what I am saying in the border - it's not buckle my shoe.

webbing orca bay

I have started the webbing for orca bay mystery quilt. I decided to web in quadrants, thinking it would be easier to handle. even though I had a mantra ( left, right, left right) on the cornerstones, I  know I will have to correct a few of them.

I was planning on using yardage for Good Fortune mystery quilt, but when I opened my strip bucket, I saw red and neutral.

A few miles later, I had pairs of strips

A little accu cutting and I had sets ready to sew

chains of red 4 patches

and the cutest little 4 patches.

Jo of Jo's country junction is trying to finish all the quilts in quiltville's string fling book before the new book is published. I am trying to finish all the mystery quilts as part of that challenge before the new mystery in November. My challenge finishes are here. It looks like Jo has reached her goal, I have not.
I did finish the first 7 mystery quilts then I ran into orca bay ( the quilt that never ends)
then I have 4 more finished.
I have 1 ready to quilt
 2 still need borders
ringo lake needs assembled. Not bad considering at the beginning of the year, I had only finished one of them. I feel like I can start the new mystery without any sense of overwhelm.

stash report November 25, 2018

I have added another bag from the quilt guild garage sale. I like the puzzles as much as the actual fabric.

I don't think the fabric was part of the pattern. It isn't flannel, but the colors were scrumptious.

I sewed at least 15 min every day this week -  orca bay

I am coming around the corner and straightening the edges.

I still have a problem corner, and I am not sure how to actually finish. There is no 1/4 inch. I may hand stitch it to a background piece. It is baby quilt size right now, hmmm.....

fish jars

I have the main part of the fish quilt finished and I decided to add a fun border.

Can you guess what I am doing?

We did all our black Friday shopping online. I sent family gifts to my children in Utah with free shipping. I even sent a gift to my Southern Indiana kiddos with free shipping. That way if we miss connections over Christmas, I won't stress about it.
We ordered a smoker for our Christmas.
I did go way to early to Joann fabrics for 70 % off of keepsake calico fabric and discovered they have moda jelly rolls 50% off with an additional 25% off.  Pretty colors.

good fortune

We spent a Thanksgiving without family this year. It was hard for me. I must have telegraphed that to a friend, who invited hubby and I for an evening meal with their family. It was fun catching up with her children and grandchildren. We hadn't seen them in a few years. I am always surprised when other's children grow up so fast. The food was sooo good. I think she served every Thanksgiving food wish I could have had. All to often, I think, we keep to our families at Thanksgiving. Maybe, I am at an age where I need to branch out with others over the holidays. So, the need to cook was strong and I made noodles. I had the day off and I still wanted to make noodles.

Today is the first clue for the new Quiltville mystery quilt - Good Fortune. I had pulled my fabric earlier.

Here is a link to the first clue at quiltville.
She started with 4 patches, which should be easy. According to my calculations, I will need 9 strips of red and 9 strips of neutral.

Update: That is only half of the 4 patch so I need 18 strips of each

I am rather disappointed about her new book release, I'm sure it works for her, but, by the time I was there, the first 500 were sold out. I tried for a long time, once, to order a ruler she kept selling out, three months later, I gave up. Well, it saves me money. I am not working that hard to buy her book.

orca sashing

Trudging ahead on orca bay mystery quilt, I have 200 + sashing units ready for webbing the top.
Will the top be done when the new mystery clue goes live? I don't know...

tokoyo subway quilt

The holidays are ramping up, which means every errand is taking twice as long, which means less time in the sewing room.

I have another row of tokoyo subway finished.

And I like this quilt for the rainbow challenge next year.

seeing red

I am feeling red today. It is cranberry season somewhere. I saw them on sale and decided to can some juice. I had never cooked cranberries before, and the instructions said to boil them until the skins burst. They actually burst with a pop that I could hear. too funny.

I made 6 quarts of juice. And thought I would try relish. I am not sure if I will like it cooked, but I make my relish by using a food processor. I use a bag of cranberries and a whole orange peel and all. I water bathed them and they were pretty in the jars.

I sliced the red strip pieced squares to prepare the sashing units for Orca bay mystery quilt. I am guessing while everyone is making the new mystery quilt. I will be building sashing for orca bay.

stash report November 18, 2018

I found this fun little project bag while thrifting this week. They are hand stitched and really interesting fabrics. Somebody spent a bit of time working on this. There is only one finished flower, but many hexagons cut. How dear of someone to share this. I just realized that I hadn't even measured the size. It is bigger than 1 inch but not 2 inches.

I restarted a very old Epp project 2 weeks ago  and I am trying to square it.

I can begin to see the shape of a quilt. I find the corners are challenging. I start in a corner, and the next thing I know, I have traveled up a side, which defeats the purpose of squaring a corner.
haha. And sometimes I go too far, like in the bottom right of the picture. Right now, it is about 20 x 28. I bet I have doubled it since restarting it. I still have a bunch of cut diamonds, and I like working on it so I will keep going. I am looking at other ideas for a rug hooking project and that could derail my star progress.

soul rows

Today for the rainbow scrap challenge, I have rows ready to assemble into a quilt for soul searching. This is the way I see it, but then it is rectangle the wrong way.

This is a more typical arrangement. I don't like it very much this way. sigh...

I have really enjoyed making this with the rainbow challenge. I used up a bit of 2 1/2 inch strips that had been hanging around for too long. I am even thinking, I might make a shirt plaid version next year. I would definitely have enough.

A little fishy

We had a beautiful freezing rain last night - as long as you didn't want to drive anywhere.

There were pretty ice sculptures everywhere.
I am still working on my "finish" quilt. I have all the pieces ready and I have started to form the rows.
But, I am thinking of complicating this quilt and making a fun border. No wonder I don't "finish" everything.

Our Meijer grocery store had turkeys for 37 cents a pound. Of course, they were the big ones. It was an interesting experience purchasing a turkey. Every woman in Kokomo was standing in front of the frozen meat case with their carts blocking the actual case. And they must have brought a friend with them. I heard many conversations about how they won't fit in the fryer, and who would ever eat that much turkey. And many said that they don't even do Thanksgiving anymore. I was surprised at how many purchased the smaller turkeys for 2.00 a pound. I guess even if it isn't smart, I will still be frugal. I thought about how there is just the 2 of us eating at home now, and, my freezer is full, but, I can't remember when I could get any meat for 37 cents a pound. So I was going to buy one or 2.
The first one, I thawed right away, and hubby smoked it. Oh my yummy. But, there was more than we could want left. I decided to can it. I made 6 quarts of turkey with broth- Glad I still have those skills.

rug hooking

Next up on my Cleveland rug is the Westside market near downtown and in a great building. I am often fascinated by old buildings, and I worry that we aren't keeping them by tearing them down and building something new. They are part of our history, so I am thrilled they renewed this one for another purpose.

I taught a workshop for my rug hooking guild this week. We were making feather trees from wool strips.

I really like these women. They are creative and strong. I have learned so much from them over the years. My husband helped with the wire cutting and by being an extra helper.

autumn jubilee

Carole from from My Carolina home offered a quilt along mystery called autumn jubilee. I did her square dance mystery earlier and really liked it. And I like her fabric choices, so I decided to start one of my own. I am late. Right now it is free and very cute. It's a classic addition for this time of year.
block a is here

I started adding a pin to the top of the last seam I sewed, so I could alternate which direction I was sewing.

And I finished 10 this far, but I can see, I didn't cut them all the same. I cut them while with my sewing group, and that can be filled with happy interruptions. I will need to check and adjust, because I am not ripping them apart LOL. This may be a pumpkiny I get this year.

Scrappy twirl

I am off teaching a rug hooking class to my guild today. We are making feather trees.  here and here
I had one more idea to try with the scrap crazy 6 template set. I used a 3 inch strip in color, and a 3 inch strip of background. I sewed them together, and used the markings on the template to center it, and cut. It takes almost a whole wof strip to have 6 cuts of the same fabric.

There is waste....

But, it is a cute block.

I don't normally keep 3 inch strips in my scrap user's system, so if I want to make a whole quilt I will need to cut from larger scraps.

How I started this  is here and here and here. and here and here and here and here
