tiger, tiger finish

At the very last minute, I have finished my one monthly goal for June. So glad to have a finish. I plan to donate this to a local shelter for hands to help.

My friend Linda brought a scrap bag to me.... I had found the tiger embroidery at a thrift store...I decided whatever I pulled out of the scrap bag, I would add to the quilt improv style. It has been fun. Some colors, I would not have put together on purpose. But, I like them together here. I think I saw a video on you tube by Beth Shibley from love laugh quilt that made a quilt this way.  I started this in 2020. It didn't take long to make the top. But, my 'to be quilted" list is very long.

the sun was funny for this shot

It is 40 x 45 and used 6 yards

I quilted an easy large stipple so that it would be soft. I used leftover pieces from the scrap bag for the binding.

I am still digging out the freezer. I canned some hamburger and stew meat in onion for gravy. I can open this for a quick meal when we are too tired to cook. I still have some chicken I want to can and get out of the freezer.

Another round

I only had a few minutes and I pulled out the snail trails blocks to add anther round. minus 1 -  where did that triangle go? silly triangle

The trucks are back. Thousands of GM trucks are filling any empty GM parking lots. Carriers bring them in to Kokomo to store them while they wait for chips. We have what used to be a large factory here, employing 10,000 auto workers. Now, it is a parts plant with 100 workers. So, most of the old
factory remains empty. Every thing was closed in 2008 - 2010. The irony was that the last part of the plant to close was a chips department.

We  had this for nearly a year last year, and, then, they disappeared. The news said they were all destroyed for the new model year. That can't be good for General Motors bottom line.

scrappy hunters star

I have the blue hunter's star pieces made. for the month of June and the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. It was time to cut more background.

There was enough block pieces to play a little with  the design and see if my idea for a scrappy colors was going to work. And, I was happy with the results. The plan was to cut and sew pieces this year, and, assemble the quilt next year. We will see when winter comes round again.

This is my poor ironing board after a visit from my Granddaughters who wanted a bed to sleep in. Sillygirls. I had no idea they were attacking the ironing board.

5 quilts June 24, 2022

My last 5 quilt progress report June 8, 2022

1. Rainbow scrap challenge - blue- I had double the blue to do this month, as, I had cut some last year that I uncovered.

2. rhododendren mystery - hunter -    I have lost the blocks. It has been too long and I don't remember where I put them.

3. Boho heart -Nothing new here

4. maple leaves - The top  is together, and I can't find a border fabric that I like

Sometimes random works, and, sometimes, it doesn't. haha

5. fair and square -I am sewing the rows together. I have the two middle rows ready to add to the top section. Then, I will have one more row to add to the bottom section and then, join the two together down the middle.

just a few more

I thought I was done with the waffle stamp blocks for the month. I needed to cut 1 1/2 inch squares for the easy breezy blocks I am making. While I was digging around, I found more short pieces and just thought I would sew a couple. Then, after making a few sets, I found shirt strips, and thought I would sew them together for future 4 or 9 patches. And finally, why not add a few more waffle stamp blocks.

It was a 1 1/2 inch kind of day.

strip sets ready to cut for the middles

future 4 or 9 patches

We are starting to see some blooms on the deck. I don't have many summer flowers, mostly Spring flowers, so I am glad to see color again. Ok, truth, I have more weeds than flowers.

fair and square progress

I was able to go to Friday quilt group and lay fair and square out a bit on the floor. That helped me put the top 4 rows together and start the bottom rows. This has been a puzzle from the beginning. Fair and square is a Bonnie Hunter pattern from her book: scraps and shirttails 2. It has been a UFO since 2019. I like the look of on point settings but, they are challenging for me.

Another of my clematis is blooming. This one is finicky. Last year it didn't bloom. I am glad to see it blooming.

hole in the barn

I really like making these blocks and see another quilt in my future. I am making this as part of the  rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. This month is blue. I am never at a loss for blue scraps. They multiply while I am asleep. I also do not have a shortage of strings and crumbs, so, a perfect combination.

I made bone broth and decided to can it rather than freeze it. To finish the canner load I canned navy beans, too. We opened a recently canned ham and bean quart to test it. It was delicious, but, not enough for everybody. I will have to plan to open two jars for a meal.

maple leaves

I am ready for the last row for this quilt. I have a hodge podge of blocks that I want to sew, making sure the mix is what I want. This is one of my 5 quilts projects, but, I am tired of seeing it on the list.

I had hoped to make 10 rows, but the last row would all be aqua. sigh...

I made it to this point this week

I canned saurkraut the old fashioned way this week.  I found the idea on whipperwill holler youtube. They won't be ready for 4 - 6 weeks. We will see if this works. I ferment saurkraut 3 -4 times a year. But it is not shelf stable. Hopefully, I will know by the time my cabbage in the garden is ready.

waffling

I cut several sets of 1 1/2 inch strips for waffle stamp blocks in blue for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. But, I ran out of the pieced middles. I thought I had made some ahead. sigh...

Sew, my sewing session involved sewing short strips together in sets of 5. I do enjoy doing this. It is a therapeutic way to sew and go with the flow. I have used most of my short strips and will have to adopt another benchmark for sewing these strips. I haven't been cutting scraps lately, maybe that will sort it for me. I get more short strips after a scrap management session.
These will surely get the blue sets done.

stash report June 12, 2022

I didn't add any fabric this week. But, we did sort through wool for the perfect red. And, after the mess, Hubby organized it a bit. Now, it is ready for a new container.

Stash report  June 12, 2022

fabric added: 0 yards

fabric added year to date: 60 3/4 yards

fabric used: 0 yards

fabric used year to date: 130 yards

70 1/4 yards used more than bought.

I sewed 3 days last week. Just busy moving stuff from the floor to a flat surface, then, moving it back to the floor - repeated until I am frustrated. I call it cleaning and organizing.

I have some hand stitching to do on my friendsheep rug, but, I have to trim and press first. I haven't gotten to that yet, But, I did put another rug on the stand, that I can work on slowly in the mean time.

I started it here in March while I was waiting for my sheep rug to finish with the other swappers. I have been adding legs and feet and a barrel. She is a fun little witch.

barrel of fun

I have been dehydrating pansies and violas. The season is about finished. We had a yard full of violas this year. Probably because our lawn mower was in the hospital. violas are great in skin care, especially the face including acne. It has anti inflammatory properties and relieves pain. It is good for mental health and helps with respiratory health and the common cold.

pretty blossoms

I started to plan the blossom time blocks in blue, then, I realized that the leftovers from my maple leaves quilt I am assembling, will be perfect for the blossom time blocks. I didn't need to cut anything for June blossoms. Now, I need to make a few more 4 patches to keep going with these. I have 80 + blocks. My goal is 128.

I am trying to clean out the freezer to make room for the upcoming harvest this year. I found some stew meat I could can and free up a little space. Now, I have easy beef for an easy dinner. At this stage of our life, I need to find easy ways to fix dinner. We are both tired at the end of the day and don't want to mess with cooking.

follow the trail

I thought I was fully loaded on my parts for the snails trail block. I needed some recreational sewing, so I started another round of blocks. I went until I ran out of 1 1/2 inch squares for the center. And, then, I ran out. hmmmm.

I made it this far and discovered another unsorted set of  pieces. I wish I would quilt hiding things from myself. sigh...But, this is a start and so much fun. I like when I play with recycled shirts.

My favorite clematis is about to burst into color. We have had this for more than 20 years and it still makes me smile. It is next to our blackberry bush.

There was a good sale on grapes at the grocery so I bought some to can. I think I had 14 pints. I made a light syrup and water bath canned them. yum. I am in a nesting mode.

5 quilts June 8, 2022

My last 5 quilt progress report May 30

1. Rainbow scrap challenge - blue- I am working on the rainbow scrap challenge colors that I didn't sew during the past months. waffle stamp blocks require the 1/12 inch block centers that have to be pieced ahead, before I can put them together. I did make the candy blocks in blue.

2. rhododendren mystery - hunter -   I finally cut the 1 inch squares I needed for the mystery quilt.

3. Boho heart - The first section on the left is together. Time to make a few blocks for the next section.

4. maple leaves - I am slowly assembling the maple leaves quilt. I have 4 rows together.

5. fair and square - Everything is ready for the assembly. I did get this far.

And 3 easy breezy blocks

crown

I still need to catch up a few green projects from May. These star and crown blocks are now finished. I had them cut, but, couldn't get them together for May. The choices for green reproduction fabrics was easy. I have plenty. And June's color is blue, and I have plenty of those as well.

We are growing our potatoes in buckets this year. The idea was to extend the garden a little, and, maybe, it will work to dump the bucket instead of digging them. We will see if we like this experiment when we harvest. But, they seem to be doing well. Some years we have a good harvest, and, some years, the critters beat us to them. Maybe buckets will at least give them a harder time.

I bought a yellow peony 2 years ago and this is the first bloom. I was afraid she was not happy here. She was ready a little after Memorial day, The pink peony was a little late too.
