stash report April 30, 2023

I bought some springy charm squares. I keep buying them for a particular quilt I have in mind. If I don't stop buying, the quilt will be a super king size.

I sewed 6 days last week.

I have a goal to add one strip of wool to my village rug everyday. Some days I add more. Sundays, I spend real time on it, and make a little more progress. I mentioned before that I am having trouble repeating the dye color for the background, so I am hooking a little everywhere on the background.

gee it's fun

And, oops, look what I bought. I swore I would not cave to the cross stitch thing. I finished that phase years ago, and, gave everything to my daughter. But.... I keep seeing such cute things on Sunday blogs.

I finished 3 purple strip weave blocks for the the rainbow scrap challenge . I still want to cut purple hsts from the small pieces, and then, I will have finished all my projects for the month in purple.

5 quilts April 28, 2023

last report April 17, 2023

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. I decided that for 2023, rather than work a little on each one at a time, I would concentrate on just one. I still use the list to plan and look ahead.

This group of 5 quilts has a lot of cutting involved. Which is not my favorite part, so, there has been a few distractions. One of them, is cleaning my sewing room floor, and, the subsequent stuff that I have found buried in the rubble. I dusted under my sewing machine where I keep all the little cast off triangles. I have 2 shoe boxes ( and a few baggies) full and this is my equivalent of legos. It is definitely more fun than cutting.

1. wensleydale - I  started cutting - I have 10 cut so far. They are definitely fiddley to cut. It will take some time.

At first, I bought the paper piecing papers, but, I found the templates for a good price, and decided to use them.

I may have to sew a couple just for fun before I get them all cut. It would be foolish to cut them all out, and discover then, that they don't sew together well. haha

2. trip around the world class- I have been asked to teach for guild. I have the strips sewn together from my stash of flannels. I have the strips ready, and, I am laying out the top. I think it will be cute.

I have the rows pinned and ready to sew together. I should be ready for the May workshop.

3. Hand me down -the top is done

And, I have added the borders. I need to piece a backing, prepare binding, and wait for the long arm to open up to quilt it. I didn't get it done for my April one monthly goal.

4. wonky courthouse steps 2 found, on the frame, quilted, trimmed, attached binding- I need to sew the binding

5. Saturday soire block of the month. This an older UFO from 2013. I opened the box, and, all of the blocks are pieced. I have the 3 setting kits to start. I am cutting for kit 1. I remember being in love with this quilt. I don't have a picture in the box, so, now, it will be a mystery. I bought the red kit as a block of the month. There was a blue option, and when the lqs closed, I bought the blue version as part of their closing sale. For now, red is one of my 5 quilts until it is finished.

workshop for guild

My guild has asked me to teach a trip around the world quilt workshop. I agreed, if, I could use what I had on hand. Of course, I would need samples of how to make it. I had a whole bucket of flannel 3 1/2 inch strips, yippee. I am not sure the colors will be a stand out, but, that is the magic of TAW quilts. They seem to do their own thing, no matter what the fabric is. I have the strip sets made, and, it is time to subcut and start laying them out.

I made progress and I am starting to see how this will go together.

Some parts of Spring have come earlier than expected and some parts are still waiting. When I first planted my bleeding heart, it would disappear. I thought it was dead and didn't make it. But, it appeared again the next Spring. It is one of many of those Spring flowers that remind us of hope and wonder. And, umm, that we better start weeding -haha.

quilt border debate

When I finished hand me down top, to be honest, I just wanted to be done. I had worked at it with intent, and, I was losing motivation. I really thought I would skip the cool border that was in the pattern and just add a plain border. I let it steep for a few days, and, I realized part of why I started the quilt, was the border. But, 5 rows? really?

I decided to go for it. I have enough fabric, and, I tend to make bed size quilts, and, I started the quilt with the border as part of the plan. The blue stripe was yardage but the rest were shirts. I had to be creative in piecing it together. This is my one monthly goal for April and I am cutting it close.

stash report April 23, 2023

I added some scraps from the guild table at our quilt show.  I haven't even taken them out of the sack. Most of  what I bought were 1.00 mystery bags filled with scrap pieces. The quilt show went well, with a smaller venue.

I entered sea sweptrainbow pineapple blossom, and Boho heart.

lucky star

This week I worked on my lucky star blocks in purple for the rainbow scrap challenge this month. I still have a week to go before the end of the month. I may still get to work on my girlie girl.

I have had fabrics pulled for a quilt for a while now. I was not in the mood for piecing, so, I started cutting. I am using recycled shirts, and making a kaliedescope quilt found in this older book. I just needed to cut 4 1/2 inch strips. I have other colors that I still need to cut. I may be cutting enough for 100 quilts, but, it was therapuetic. The book still has templates, and, no rotary cutting instructions. I can remember my first quilts were made that way. Thank goodness for the invention of rotary cutting.

hand me down top

I have been working on the blocks for hand me down in an effort to make rows and join rows. There was minimal matching with the every other block layout.

so fun

I finished the rows at an open sew at the library. Ooo I like it. I am not sure about borders. It is a bout 74 x 74 as it is. I think I will let it rest a bit, and see I want to finish it.

Hand me down is a Bonnie Hunter pattern found in her first book.

shirts recycled

At some point, I started cutting shirts, and, I wanted to organize them. I think it was when I pulled a new UFO project from storage called hand me down. I cut 11 quilt kits - 2 scrappy pinwheels, pineapple blossom, rail fence, 2 ohio star, snails trail, churndash, barnyard split nine, boxed shirts, and take 5. I have a kaliedescope quilt I want to cut.

I cut layer cakes, charm squares, 3 1/2 inch strips, 2 1/2 inch strips, and, I now have a large bag of crumbs and strings. I decided to spend March with my shirt fabrics. I renewed my love for the look and feel. I counted 49 plastic containers - yes 49, and, I wanted to reduce by 10 %. There are less buckets of fabric, but if the quilt kits stay around, the fabrics are still here somewhere LOL

I did cut through 5 plastic containers, and, I have the remaining containers all in one place. It helped me realize, I don't need to be so careful using them. I have plenty if I need them, again. All the cut shirt kits fit in one smaller plastic container.

This set shows finishes that seemed to take forever to finish. The new ones look more interesting to me as a set. I will be able to jump back and forth when I need a break. And, there will be more portable parts for social sewing.

wool runner finish

My Friday finish is a wool runner from 2013. I decided not to quilt it. I finished the floss work and attached the backing. I gave it a good press with a wet towel, and, it is lovely, even if, the grass is not. The wool in the kit was hand dyed in beautiful vibrant colors.
