I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another.

I finished 1 ufo in April

I worked on these older Ufos to finish them

1.  peppermint candy - This was my one monthly goal for April   it is finished

60 x 70 = 14 yards

1. kaleidoscope - I am ready to quilt this.

2. scrappy twirl - I need to join the blocks with the border

3. fancy fox - a new older ufo on the list and it needs sashings and assembly

4. hollow nine - rainbow scrap challenge from 2023 that needs the border Which intend to applique. fingers crossed.

My April PHD report

scrap cutting

I have added another goal to the 5 quilts project. I want to take one day a month and cut scraps. I will have plenty to choose from since I really didn't cut any for 2024, and the bags of uncut scraps are piling up, all over the fabric room.

I cut a big scrap bag for April. And it weighed 9 pounds 13 ounces of shirtings scraps. The cut pieces weighed 1 pound 5 ounces which is 4 yards of useable fabric. 2025 totals so far 12 1/2 yards useable fabric

 quilts to be quilted:

1. wedding ring I have had this ready for a few years, but, I am afraid to quilt it myself. I want it to be special and I don't do special. So I will work to talk my self into it..... some day

Looking forward to April - finally adding a few new ufos to the list

3. fancy fox

I came home from quilt guild with these lovlies. I have a small collection of whimsicals that I keep. She spoke at our guild once, and I loved her work.

pfeffernusse and windmill

Red is the color for April for the rainbow scrap challenge. My choice for an older ufo that uses the color red was pfeffernusse.  It is a Bonnie Hunter pattern from her book string fling.  I started it with 72 string blocks in 2016. In 2017, I cut and made 288 red hourglass blocks. Here at the end of April, I have cut each string block and sewn a white hst with a brown one. They all needed trimmed.

I did manage to get one big block made to see what it would look like. It is a  pretty block. Now, it will wait for another turn for more progress. Maybe, it will come out during brown month. I am pleased with the progress.

All the red windmill blocks will join it's friends waiting for next month's color.

peppermint candy finish for April

I found this in quiltmaker magazine and cut it out, in 2018, while I was cleaning up Christmas fabrics. That is all the farther I got, before it landed in the ufo closet. I made the blocks while I was away for the winter this year, with my trusty featherweight. Back home again, I changed the pattern and chose an on- point layout to finish it. It was part of my 5 quilt list and my one monthly goal to finish it in April.

progress

I've made progress on my one monthly goal for April. Peppermint candy rows are ready and some are joined. I overcut the setting triangles and will trim them down. I have to decide the borders and add it to the quilting cue.

I've worked on an older ufo called pfeffernusse as part of the rainbow scrap challenge this month. I needed to cut all the string blocks in half and join them together - 72 brown and white hsts. They all need trimming.

more red scraps

Red is the color for April for the rainbow scrap challenge. Red scraps are my second most plentiful scrap bin. Blue is the first.

I made more zipper blocks foursies. I was tickled that all the blocks are sewn into foursies, until I realized, I am making rows 10 x 12. I see some unpicking in my future.

I have slowly been making sugar grove blocks with yellow centers.  I have several baggies made that contain all the hsts for the blocks. There is red used too. That may have to do if I don't get more started for red centers.

I cut and sewed strip sets of windmills  in red. The strips are at least 18 inches long before I cut them into 4 1/2 inch sections. I am using a light gray background.

scrap cutting for april

I found a box of scrappy leftovers of shirt fabric, that is my next project for scrap cutting. It weighed 9 pounds 13 ounces. I am trying to spend my time at Friday sew, once a month, to cut scraps. When I was done the box weighed 5 pounds 2 ounces.

I didn't get that much cut this month. I think there was too much to decide which took longer. My plan is to take a piece of fabric out of the box, and cut the biggest piece I can and then work my way down the list - 10, 5, 3 1/2, 2 1/2, 2, 1 1/2.  I have a box for each one. I had 1 shirt back that was at least a fat quarter. The cut pieces weighed 1 pound 5 ounces which is 4 yards of useable fabric.

I have a few more rows done for peppermint candy.

I picked up a few things from the guild table at our quilt show. This is what I bought after the 1/2 off sale. I haven't checked my non sale bag yet. This is the fun stuff. My own version of an Easter egg hunt.

I have started the vines for the section of berries that I will do next. The piece is quite cumbersome but I like doing the bias stems.

time for red scraps

red is the color for April for the rainbow scrap challenge

I made the zigzag units in red. A great way to use up bits and pieces of 1 1/2 inch strips. I am anxious to start sewing a few together and see how it will look.

I began the process of sewing zipper blocks with red into foursies. I made the blocks

quilt show entries

Today is our guild quilt show. We have our show every other year. These are the four I decided to show. We were only allowed 3, but, they didn't get enough, so they asked us to bring 4. Many of our older members don't quilt much anymore.

snow days has a lot of embroidery in the light color in the center. It has a sentimental story. Pictures do not do it justice.

lozenges is a Bonnie Hunter project that I swapped blocks with quilting buddies and my daughter.

strip tease Is a quilt that both my quilting friend Linda and I both made our own versions. We worked on them at the same time. She beat me on finishing, but I quilted hers. She wanted both quilts hanging together at the show.

midnight flight is a Bonnie Hunter quilt from her book More adventures with leaders and enders.

peppermint candy decision

I had a chance to lay out my peppermint candy blocks with an on point setting. The pattern called for sashing, but, I couldn't find any that I really liked. I was able to use a big table at the library. I liked the on point setting, and that is what I will do to finish it. I pinned the rows together and I can just join the blocks at home when I get a chance.

3 rows are started

stash report April 6, 2025

I pulled out an older ufo project box that had the project that is next for my 5 quilt project. It had a bunk mate that I didn't remember. I decided I was going to donate it to guild for donations. I think it might be time to go through my ufo closet and rediscover what is in there. I'm sure I could reduce unwanted projects.

Pfeffernuesse

The rainbow scrap color for April is red. I chose a Bonnie Hunter ufo called pfeffernusse from her book string fling. I started a lot of string projects when her book first was published. I liked all of them, what can I say?

I started it with 72 string blocks in 2016. In 2017, I cut and made 288 red hourglass blocks.  My plan is to make whatever progress I can during the month. Meanwhile, I need to get busy with my other red scrap blocks.

kaleidoscope borders

I finally figured out how I want to make the borders for kaleidoscope using Marti Micell's template. I needed to take apart the border pieces that were already sewn and add the top triangle before sewing the unit together. When I made a new row, I could do it right in the first place.

I added the top border.

altogether, I added 3 borders and I have one to go before it was time to leave the open sew. I really like how this one looks. I have decided that I don't want a darker outer border.
