traffic jam blocks

I decided it was time to count and decide about my traffic jam quilt blocks. I made these this year as part of  the rainbow scrap challenge. I believe this was a Pat Sloan qal. I used 2 1/2 inch squares from my scrap bin and 4 1/2 inch square for the corners from the color of the month. The blocks are 12 inch finished. My goal for the year was 12 for a 3 x 4 layout. Now, I think that is too small. The plan is to work on these again next year with a better plan for finishing. It is a sure bet I have enough 2 1/2 inch squares in the scrap bin for next year.  Maybe a 2 1/2 inch squares sashing?

midnight flight stars

I attended my Friday quilt group and began putting the star blocks together for my midnight flight Ufo. I made four to make sure I could, and then, starting joining the blocks in twosies. At this point, I am excited to see this quilt come together. I can almost see a finish.  I like revisiting all the scraps from 2017.

hen and chicks

I did a little sewing on the hens and chicks this week for the rainbow scrap challenge . Which was a hard choice, since the fall weather has been perfect here. The trees were turning, and the temperature was great, and the sun was shining.

I still have 2 black and all the brown to do.

And one lonely sugar grove block.

one monthly goal midnight flight

My one monthly goal for October was to finish all the quadrant blocks for midnight flight Ufo and I have done that. It is especially fun in that this part of the quilt has seemed to take forever. Yet, it was only the first of September that I pulled this project out of the ufo closet as part of the 5 quilt project. I began this Bonnie Hunter quilt from her book addicted to scraps in 2017.

last windmill blocks

I decided to make the last 10 blocks I needed to finish my windmill blocks for the year. I had counted them earlier and realized I was 10 short. I added grays, black, and a surprise orange found on the sewing table. That gives me 63 blocks for a 7 x 9 layout. I have tentatively added the windmill block to next year's rainbow scrap challenge list. It was easy, quick, and a good use for scrappy 2 1/2 inch strips. It would take 32 strips from a jelly roll to make it this size. The blocks are 8 1/2 inches. The quilt would be 56 x 72 more or less.

midnight flight blocks

I finally attended my Friday group sew and was able to work on midnight flight again. It has been awhile. I needed 25 more blocks to finish the red quadrants. I made 10 or so and almost finished the last 10. This has been a project that has been my portable project and I had stopped being portable for a bit since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am recovering and doing much better. I have two weeks before treatments begin and I want to quilt again. The hardest part has been getting my head back in the game.

Box kite finish

Box kite is finished. This is an older ufo from 2017 and is a Bonnie Hunter's pattern from her book addicted to scraps.  In 2023, I started cutting the borders for this quilt as part of the rainbow scrap challenge. I could cut so many in each color as it was called as the color of the month. In march of this year, I started assembly of the blocks as part of my 5 quilt project. And, I quilted and bound it in October. I sure love all the scrappiness. It is fun to see the secondary and more patterns after finishing.

74 x 82 = 22 yards

rainbow windmill blocks

I decided to make scrappy windmill blocks as part of my rainbow scrap challenge this year. It was my meager attempt to use 2 1/2 inch strips from my scrap saver system. SO, far, Nothing actually depletes the 2 1/2 inch strip bins. But I try. It was time to assess what I have done, and, what I need to do to finish for the year. My goal was 7 x 9 blocks. My count was short by 10.

I could make 10 more or I could do a 6 x 8 layout and have a few leftover. Right now, I think I will make the extra 10. I have 2 more months to go before the end of the year. I did enjoy making them and could make them again next year.

stash report October 13, 2024

It has been six months since I purchased from Missouri star. But, I started a bundle and gave into temptation. I don't need anything but loved the eye candy. I already have a lovely collection of batiks and hardly ever use them. Especially this year, since, I haven't started any new projects. But, I am itching to start something.

diamond strings finish

I finished diamond strings from my older ufos. This one started in 2017. At least that is when I made the string blocks. It was put away until July of this year when I dug it out for my 5 quilt project. It only needed the border.

64 x64 = 15 yards

mindless sewing

I finished the last 2 blocks from yesterdays post about my zig zag ripple blocks. I decided to finish with gray for the blocks.

I did a little sewing on snails trail blocks made from recycled shirt fabric. and finished 5 blocks. These are my go to 'comfort' blocks for mindless sewing.

zig zag ripple blocks

I enjoy participating in the rainbow scrap challenge each year. I pick a few quilt ideas that will use up scraps in a certain size. This year for the 1 1/2 inch strips I followed the color of the month and made a zig zag ripple block. Now, that it is the end of the year, I wanted to clean out some of my projects and regroup. I did a count of ripple blocks for the year and I had 70 finished. My goal was 72. I found 2 gray strips and I will make those and, then, the blocks will go into the ufo closet for a little vacation.

stash report October 6, 2024

I dug out about a 5 yard hunk of white from my stash with the intention to cut it into sizes, I will use in next year's projects. I seem to use a lot of neutral fabrics each year. Since I am recovering from breast surgery, I can plan and organize a little without much trouble. Sewing will start again soon.

a little more black

I played catch up with sugar grove blocks for September and the rainbow scrap challenge. I had another black drawer that I didn't even remember. I am certainly set for 2 1/2 inch black strips. I was able with the new color to make 5 more block kits. I am sure it is time to do a real time count and decide what to do next. I am trying to make kits without repeating the same color in each block, but it seems there are a lot of over flowing bags of 3s and maybe 2s. Somehow, I hope to continue this project into next year.

halloween table runner finish

My first ufo finish for October.

I needed to make decisions about the stripe for my halloween table runner before I sewed it together.

pumpkins inside

or outside

my choice

finished top

Maybe, I wish I had paid more attention to cutting motifs at the seams, but, I was just trying to make it as big as I could. It still will be fun for Halloween. I do really like the pumpkins and their faces. I used my longarm to quilt it, by attaching a leftover piece of batting with no backing and then the top. That way I could pillowcase the piece with no binding as the pattern suggested.
