finally a finish

I finished the binding on my EPP diamond quilt. And I can call it finished. It has been a few months since I have had a finish. Meanwhile, I haven't stopped sewing, and, the tops are still piling up in the closet. I need to move a long.

This was my very first English Paper Piecing. I started ( 2009)  with this quilt I needed a hand project for an airplane trip to Utah to see my daughter. I was sure I didn't want to do hexagons ( what did I know?) And this seemed simple enough to be a starter project. I hooked Katie on paper piecing, but, she went to hexagons, and, then, so did I. I have participated in swaps over the years and I still have a big project that I am slowly working on in the evenings.....sometimes.

cut list progress

I decided to make a cutting hit list for scrap management. You can read about it here. It has been a month. and, I am surprised at how much I have gotten done. I made a list of what I would need to cut for a few quilts in my ufo and maybe someday lists. With a pile of scraps, I move down the list and cut what I can to fill the need for these quilts.

It went from neat and tidy stacks to zip lock bags as I cut more and more. I am not worried about numbers yet. If when I am ready to make these quilts, and I have cut too many, I can always feed the extras into the scrap users system I have used for years.

Diffusion is a quilted twins free pattern that is simple 9 patches. I am cutting in fall colors with 2 inch strips. If the scrap is not fall color, I go to another quilt on the list. I have a gallon zip lock bag full of strips.

Suzies snowball is a a great quilt to cut with 2 inch squares when that is all that is left. The bag is full, too. At this point I could retire this one. And pick another quilt to cut. - undecided

I cut red, blue and aqua rectangles for quiltville unity quilt round 5. I need 2 inch neutral strips for a variety for the borders. I have the rectangles for the geese cut and many 2 inch strips. I can move on to cutting round 6.

Strip weave is a new small quilt that I will probably use next year for the rainbow scrap challenge. I need to cut 2 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 3 of the same size and I have a few of those cut. I am concerned about random choices.

I have a color block quilt that I am putting scraps bigger than 4 1/2 inches in black red or white  for triangles in an hour glass alternate block. I have a few of those.

And another new one for next years rainbow scrap challenge using a hollow nine block. I am cutting 3 1/2 inch squares. I have a big bag of them.

My overall opinion is very positive for how this is working for me. I am still enjoying the cutting, and feel more like I am moving goals forward, than, if, I just cut the usual sizes to fill the drawers. I have one or two that I am worried about, that I might not like them so scrappy when it comes to making the quilt. I like that it has added a puzzle challenge to the mundane task of cutting scraps.

I think I can say I have cut enough for unity clue 5, and, will retire that until I have a chance to sew that clue.

I am sure I have enough cut for Suzie's snowball so it will go back to the ufo list.

The rest are still active, but, I need to add some projects to the cut list.

boho monday

I have had a roadblock working on this quilt. I stop and start alot. Last week, I was half way through this section 2, and, I was able to finish it in one evening. It was a great feeling. I am half way through the quilt. I have many of the blocks already done. I just have to sew the pesky vertical sections. I am doing a rainbow colored heart. There are two of us completely done, and, two of us still working on it. And I think the other friend is waiting for me to get closer, to finish hers. She is so sweet, and, doesn't want me to feel like the last man done. This is also one of my 5 quilts.

The nasturtiums are still blooming and making new seeds for next year.

Stash report September 25, 2022

I added a couple more charm packs and a new mister to my stash. I really like the misting bottles for the starch. They don't clog and give a more even spray.

hunters star

I used all the blue colors for hunter's star earlier this year for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. SO, I am using this month of light blue to start sewing blocks together for my hunter's star. I used an accuquilt die to cut the pieces, and, I sewed the half blocks together during the month according to color of the month. If I had made this before, I would have realized that I needed to press the pieces differently to get a good nesting of the seams.  I am taking the light piece by color and sewing it to a different dark color. If I am doing blue, I sew to a pink, red, orange, yellow, green, purple, turquoise. Then, I use a red and go through the colors again and so on.

so pretty

It's a matching game LOL

I am surprised how well the pansies have done this year. I usually kill them off by the end of June. We started these from seed in our basement, maybe, that is the difference. And, I have been harvesting and drying the flowers for soaps, and creams. Maybe, keeping the blooms cut off has let it keep going. Now, I will wait for it to make more seeds for next year.

scrap cutting

I blogged about making a cutting hit list here. And, I am surprised at how successful it has become. I was able to add to my projects on the list, and, I had a few leftover scraps to add to the scrap users system that has served me well for many years. I have a tray of 2 1/2, 2, and 1 1/2 inch strips.

I have a tray of 3 1/2 inch strips, 2 1/2 x 4 1/2  and 2 x 3 1/2 inch rectangles. I had a few smaller pieces that became 2 1/2 and 1 1/2 inch squares.

Our apples have been falling from our old apple trees. I tried canning them in syrup with a touch of cinnamon. I am not sure why I lost all the water.  But, I am sure they will be yummy.

circa rows

I had a wonderful sew day with my quilt guild. We met at the library and had a pitch in lunch - yummy

I worked on three projects. I have started making blocks for dotty bow ties ( I need 80), And, I added the third row to rhododendron mystery quilt. Then, I could settle in, and sew triangles to squares until I was too tired to go any further.

I made 2 more rows  and sewed them to the top. I didn't get a picture after I sewed them together circa 1880 was a swap I participated in with my quilty friends.

blossom time

I am using leftover strips from my maple leaves quilt for the new light blue blossoms for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I made more stems and leaves and 4 patches. I think I will need to carry this project over to next year, to get all the blocks I will need.

We have seen our weather turn cooler, and, then, return to hot. Most of the garden is sputtering. I still have a few blossoms around the house. Nasturtiums are still blooming. Petunias and pansies are still blooming. Our old old apple trees are dropping apples. Hubby picks them up and cuts the bad spots out and they are a lot of work, but they are the best tasting apples. The squirrels are racing us for them.

boho monday

We had a fun Saturday with a trip to Danville Indiana for a woolkeepers 'hook in'. The weather was lovely and the skies were blue. The projects on display were amazing and wool was everywhere in beautiful colors. I managed to leave it all behind and spent my money on cushing dye to dye my own wool. I have started dyeing background for my village rug, and, I was afraid, I would not have enough of the dyes I used in the mixture. It is a big rug, and, I will need 6 yards of background.

I had a chance to work on boho again. I am making the blocks from section 2. The current color is yellow/orange.

There is plenty of catnip to harvest and dry for herbal teas. For a cat, it is a happy stimulant. For a human, it is calming.

stash report: September 11, 2022

We have more rain, expecting to last all day. I am sure the garden is very happy. I went to a rug hooking event yesterday, and, was inspired with the colors, and textures, and rugs.

I bought dye in case I need more for the background of my village rug.

Since, I had a project this year that needed civil war reproduction fabrics, I realize I have a lot of holes in my colors, and, that, I truly like the look of them. I hope I will use more in my quilting future. I added a tan piece this week, and, I found a lost honey bun.

Stash report  September 11, 2022

fabric added: 2.5 yards
fabric added year to date: 92.5 yards

fabric used: 0 yards  I am close to a finish

fabric used year to date: 170 3/4 yards

78.25 yards used more than bought.

I sewed 5 days last week.

I have added a bit more spooky moon to my spellbound rug. It is fall like outdoors and I am feeling the witchy vibe. It won't be long, before we are buying pumpkins, and, apples and, waiting for halloween. Still, I will set this aside in favor of my village rug that has waited forever for the background.

hole and candy

I have all the blocks I need to make this rainbow project into a top. I have really enjoyed making this. I liked using my smallest pieces to make the string rectangles into something useful. By using the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. the colors are bright and happy. I have moved them to a box of their own and plan to take them with me to open sews for assembly.

I was one block short of having all the blocks I need for the candy quilt. I felt I needed a chocolate in there someplace.

This block has been fun to make as well. The string centers are 4 1/2 inches and the borders are 2 1/2 inches. I have boxed them for assembly as a portable project.

fair and square top

Fair and square is a top. The borders have been added and it looks really nice. Everything fit nicely. I need a big back and some binding before it is ready to be quilted and added to the list. I have not been quilting in a bit, so, my pile of tops is growing again.

I had some baby starts that I added as an afterthought to my raised bed this summer. They have tried very hard, but, haven't thrived. I hope they make it to next year. Truthfully I didn't think they would even make it this far. The front plant is wooly lambs ear, and, the back plant is calendula.

keep growing babies
