one monthly goal finish

I have been busy trying to rearrange my sewing room. The mess has gotten to me and I want to streamline my sewing furniture. This meant my first visit to ikea in Indianapolis and rethinking what I really want. But, we have slowed down a bit as we have aged, and it has resulted in aches and pains. We have to take time to recover.

At the beginning of April I set a few goals for the one monthly goal challenge here.
I wanted to finish the quiltville mystery quilt Allietare. But, I haven't found any of the fabrics I used in the quilt. SO I have to postpone this finish a bit longer.

And I wanted to assemble the top for my Smith mountain morning quilt. This I was able to do.

I made my April swap blocks for our circa 1880 swap.

And, I am current on all the rainbow scrap challenge projects. April was an aqua month.

the end of the rainbow

I can't believe it is the last Saturday in April. I tend to leave the end of the rainbow quilt for the end of the rainbow scrap challenge. Not because it is my least favorite block, but, because I have to "make" the fabric. And all through the month, I have little bits leftover from the other projects that I can use to make the block. I am really excited about this block and quilt.

I have the first two rows assembled. It is bigger than I thought.

I have a finish, and even though I haven't found a sunny day, I took photos.  It is a queen sized quilt from a Bonnie Hunter pattern in scraps and shirttails. I blogged about it here. I made it using "made " fabric as the center squares and recycled shirts as the sashings.

I did a free motion swirl pattern all over the quilt on my long arm. Even with the wind, there is always an errant thread somewhere. haha

Mr. Frosty #1 is complete and I have started Mr. Frosty #2.

If I am doing a dark night sky, I am not sure what color to make the hat yet. I  want it to contrast. So black won't work. I guess I will get colorful.

Whenever I am tidying scraps ( almost all the time), If I find a floral that I can get a block or two for Florabunda,  I cut it into a 3 1/2 inch strip for the triangles and 2 inch strips for the 4 patches.

I used all my aqua 2 1/2 inch squares, and even cut a few, to have enough to make the scraptastic star. I am not sure all of the colors I have made will play well together in a finished quilt but I am enjoying this block.
Most of it can be leader/ ender for itself while chain sewing. If I think enough ahead, I can keep different parts going while I am sewing sections together.  Toward the end, I made 3 -4 patches as leader ender.

I had quilt guild last night. It is estimated that 80% of our members aren't quilters. hmmm why? And of the 20% of the quilters, I am a different duck as a scrap quilter, who likes lots of pieces, and bed size quilts.

Spring fever

I have felt a bit overwhelmed of late, as Spring has presented a whole new list of  things to do. Our neighbors have already mowed 3 times, and we have a dead battery on our lawn mower. It's not like we have officially declared it Spring. We had a light coating of snow Monday morning, and it was 76 degrees yesterday. No wonder we are confused.
In the sewing room, Spring fever has me wanting to clean, rather than sew. And every time I clean, I find new tangents to distract me. I am so blessed with wonderful fabrics, and tools, and little bits of scraps, and projects.
I have started the assembly of the scrappy twirl quilt. Some of the blocks had gone rogue, but are found again.

And, I have been adding florabunda blocks to the group as time permits and as leader enders.

Hubby and I had a fun trip to the Greencastle Indiana fiber fair. It was a wonderful splash of color at the festival and along the drive.
My Mother attended Depauw university and my Aunt Betty worked in the offices there. After all these years, I was still able to find my way to where she lived.

tiny tuesday

I had hoped to have a finish to show this week, but, it has been pouring down rain for 3 days, and I haven't gotten a picture. I did work on my tiny Tuesday blocks for the rainbow scrap challenge. I finished a green one and an aqua block that I didn't see how it was supposed to be set, so they are without the settings. They will finish at 4 1/2 inches

I finished the string umbrella. After I add the settings, they will finish at 7 inches.

And, I had a lot of fun making this little owl. My more modern friend had gifted me with these scraps just days before. I don't know that he will match my other scraps, but, I still think he is great.

Two Friday group sews, and all the 4 patches are attached for Fair and square, a quiltville pattern. I am thrilled with the scrappy goodness.

I have the framing pieces cut, and will start adding them to the blocks at the next Friday group sew. It won't be this Friday as hubby and I are off to a fiber festival for the day.

Yesterday was rug hooking guild, and I started mr. snowman. He is going to be so cute.

new rug hooking project

I have been very slow on rug hooking my circles rug. I started 4 circles in January, and have just finished them. I was doing this as an in between project. I had finished the Cleveland rug, and I hadn't decided what the next project would be.  I have some really great projects in the planning stages. I just couldn't decide.

It will be a big rug. Each of the bigger circles are 4 1/2 inches and I fill in with whatever size will fit. I have a long way to go, But, I have a new project and I am setting this aside until next time.

I had the string piecing bug last week, and when it hits, it's best to go with it. I think I was primarily anxious to clean up the mess. I worked on sand castles. I am half way through the blocks I need, with most of them trimmed and depapered.

While I was cleaning I would pick up any stray small pieces, and add them to a strip of adding machine tape. I had found a bag of adding machine tape at goodwill recently, and thought I would try using them for string piecing. It was fun. It's a good combination of strings and crumb piecing.
It made the diagonal string piecing ( not my favorite) go better.

I was surprised at how fast it was in comparison, and, also, that there were this many small bits to clean up. No wonder the mess was getting to me. Where did they come from and how did they end up on the floor?

stash report April 14, 2019

We have started birthday season in our family. My hubby's is the 4th, Youngest son is the 6th, Son number 3 is the 18th, and many more in our extended family.

I am looking for mustard, cheddar color fabric. This was supreme cotton from Missouri star quilt company. It is a beautiful color. I have some more ordered, before I choose. And, while I was there, I added a few 'deals" to my cart.

I am looking forward to slow Sunday stitching today. It is a cold and rainy Spring day. After church, I am cuddling up with some hand stitching. My goal is to finish this hexie and get it set into the mothership part of the quilt.

I finished grand illusion this week, so my report looks better.

I stitched 15 minutes every day this week just on clean up duty. As I was tidying from projects, I'd find little bits, that I just had to sew a few minutes before I put it away. I am easily distracted from cleaning.

I have been playing in the aqua scraps. I made the flying home blocks in light and dark. I just saw this block called the humility block in an old magazine. I know why... I often get the pieces turned around and have to unpick and resew. And it is an easy block. sigh.. I have made some interesting variations, though. But, no chance, of pride on making this one for me.

I made 4 patches for the someday irish chain quilt.

I am filling the box, probably for next year.

I made the checkerboard 4 patches for woven checkerboard.

 And, I found some florals for florabunda, and, although it is not rainbow quilt, I found them, and cut them while they were there.

this and that

Remember how full my closet is of quilts to be quilted? This is one of them. Sister's 9 patch is a quiltville quilt that I thought had been done for awhile, waiting in the closet to be quilted. I told myself I can not start anything new, until, I quilt a quilt, of my own, from the closet. I grabbed this one.
But, it is not ready. The back wasn't actually pieced and then, I realized it needs borders as well, and binding.

 This was the first finished quilt block from a student in the workshop I taught. It is wonderful and scrappy. I was thrilled when she sent the email.

This is a donation quilt Linda made.

And her snowflake block using scrappy reproduction fabrics. In our Friday group, we had 3 people making their snowflake block.

And, Sue was doing a bit of binding for a cute great granddaughter quilt.
