5 quilt December 30, 2024

  last report December 2, 2024

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another.

This report finishes 2024. I will have 3 quilts I will carry over into 2025. But, I will rearrange them to feel like I am starting fresh with the new year. My goal is to quilt each finish each ufo - quilted and bound before I move to the next quilt. But, I will have 5 quilts again that I can work on as I have opportunity. The variety helps keep it interesting while not overwhelming.

I finished 1 ufo in December for a total of  41 for the year -I have a page at the top of the blog for 2024 finishes.

I worked on these older Ufos to finish them

1. midnight flight - my one monthly goal for December was to finish and I barely made it.

84 x 84

2. scrappy twirl -assemble rows -I cut the border pieces

3. tiny tuesday -I am making 8 rows

4. charming stars -   I gave the blocks away to guild

5. kaleidoscope quilt- border- This was missing and is now found again

I am ready to start fresh with all new projects for 2025. I used a random number generator and chose 26 ufos from my list. I added the last 3 of 2024 ufos that were not finished to list as well.

28 over my goal of 12 for the year

Looking forward to January:

1. squared away - This is my one monthly goal for January. I want to assemble the top.

2. peppermint candy - I need to make the blocks

3. kaleidoscope - I need to make the outer border

4. scrappy twirl - I need to join the blocks with the border

5. tiny tuesday - finish the rows

stash report December 29, 2024

I am still sorting through a buried box in my fabric room. The box contained hunks and chunks that had not been folded and sorted by size. This batch was the 1/4 yard or less size and I added these to my scrap bins by color.

 stash report December 29, 2024

fabric added this week: 0 yards

fabric added year to date for 2024: 102 yards

fabric used: 25 yards midnight flight finish

84 x 84 = 25 yards

fabric used year to date for 2024: 698 yards  -I can't believe I have used that much

596 yards used more than bought in 2024

I sewed 6 days last week.

I have tried to add a few strips of wool every day, to my Christmas rug, hoping that it will eventually help finish this wonderful rug. I am chugging along with the background.

tiny tuesday orange row

I am still working on my tiny Tuesday sampler from 2019. I started this as a quilt along with the Rainbow scrap challenge group. As I move along, I fall in love with it again. I have also added some orphan blocks to fill out the rows by color. The blocks were designed by the academic quilter

I could spread it out at the library

midnight flight finish

Midnight flight is finished. I began piecing the pieces in 2017.   As part of my 5 quilt project, I started making the blocks from the pieced units in September 2024. It was my one monthly goal for December to finish it. This was huge project. But it is beautiful in person. It was huge now but the cutting  and piecing the first units in 2016 and 2017, it was big as well. Sometimes, I forget to be grateful for the past me for getting the tedious parts done. It is also my 41st finish for 2024 and the last finish for the year. I will be excited to start on 2025 ufos that I want to finish. I plan to stick to my 5 quilt project again in 2025. It seems to be working for me.

an applique project

I restarted an older ufo applique project - across the wide missourri- this year for the rainbow scrap challenge. I started it 2018. I made 3 blocks before abandoning the project that year.

At the beginning of this year, I had a few blocks finished, and, I wanted to work month by month with the rainbow scrap challenge.

I chose block 6 to start.

I finished the tree  and  the stars. I cut pieces for the chimney and cabin, and that, was it for the rest of the year. I gave up. But, as I plan a vacation coming soon, I realized this project would make a good car project. I have a renewed sense of purpose and will prepare a few pieces for traveling. Hopefully, I will make enough progress to feel like finishing it next year. It didn't work well for the rainbow scrap challenge so if I do continue working on this I will do it as part of my 5 quilt project.

stash report December 22, 2024

I found yet another box of buried random fabrics that needed measured and folded. I am guessing because they were under a yard. Everything, under a yard and bigger than 1/2 yard, I fold the same so that I can tell how much fabric it is.

1/2 yards

 stash report December 22, 2024

fabric added this week: 0 yards

fabric added year to date for 2024: 102 yards    2023- 166 1/4 yards

fabric used: 0 yards

fabric used year to date for 2024: 673 yards  - 2023 - 576 yards

571 yards used more than bought in 2024 - 2023 380.75

I sewed 6 days last week.

I have tried to add a few strips of wool every day, hoping that it will eventually help finish this wonderful rug. The Christmas tree is a fun diversion.

Not much progress this time. Last year at this time, I was still working on the center background around the reindeer. I looks like another Christmas has passed without this finished. That will make the finish even sweeter.

squared away again

I made these blocks in 2018 as part of the  rainbow scrap challenge BOM called squared away. This is my first, 5 quilt UFO project for 2025. It was fun to dig these blocks out of the dark hole, ufo, closet. I really like all the blocks and look forward to finishing this. I am especially glad to turn the page on 2024 and start fresh with a rainbow scrap quilt. I am planning an on point layout. I am taking this with me on a celebratory vacation to visit some sunshine and my son.

I am pretty sure I am the last to finish.

midnight flight top

The top is done for  midnight flight. hooray!

I finished the borders last week. The borders fit perfectly. I am pleased with how well all the pieces fit together.  Since I have emptied my 'to be quilted' closet, I can put it on the longarm frame immediately. I am on track to finish the quilt this month for my one monthly goal.

midnight flight borders

I am inching toward a finish for  midnight flight. These are the cornerstones for the borders. I have two borders made, and, I just finished the last two. So far, every Bonnie Hunter pattern I have made, the pieced borders fit perfectly. Hopefully, I will still make my one monthly goal of a finish by the end of the month. Every day, I try to do some part of the process, in keeping with my energy level. I had not cut the cornerstones, when, I cut and started the pieces for this quilt in 2016, and there wasn't any extra pieces of the fabrics in the box. I knew I could use all the pieces from my stash except the cheddar ( the beauty of a scrappy quilt). It took me a minute to find a suitable replacement for the cheddar since it was a constant.

scrappy twirl

Finally, there has been some movement on my scrappy twirl quilt. I added it to my 5 quilts project in March. I started assembly, but did not have a finish in mind, so it has spent a lot of time on a design wall. I cut pieces to create a line at the end of each row.

this is my plan so far

stash report December 15, 2024

I was tidying a little bit... ok, I was looking for something, and was 'forced' to tidy a little bit. I found a large box of fabric that had not been folded or measured, and completely forgotten and buried. These pieces are less than a yard but at least 1/2 yard. I added the neutrals to my stash and I did locate what I was trying to find.

it is an eclectic mix

fabric used year to date for 2024: 673 yards

571 yards used more than bought in 2024

I sewed 2 days last week. I made and added a side border to my midnight flight ufo. It wasn't hand stitching but definitely slow for Slow Sunday Stitching. I need a new hand stitching project.

yellow tiny tuesday row

I was short 2 blocks for the yellow row for my tiny Tuesday sampler. This an older Rainbow scrap challenge sampler from 2019. I attended a guild open sew Saturday for a couple of hours, and, I was able to finish the row. Yellow is my favorite color in general, but not always in quilting. I do think it is a bit of sunshine in a scrappy quilt. I have 3 rows done, and 4 or 5 to go before assembly. If I could just focus a little better, I could get it done. Sewing has stalled on my midnight flight ufo, since, it looks like I don't have enough border pieces.

stash report December 8, 2024

Another jelly roll has found it's way here. I use a lot of neutrals each year, and I might as well stock up for the new year. We have had bitter cold weather here.

fabric added this week: 3 yards

fabric added year to date for 2024: 102 yards

fabric used: 0 -I didn't have any finishes this week, my quilting closet is empty. I tried an open sew yesterday, but I just didn't focus on my ufos in progress very well.

fabric used year to date for 2024: 673 yards

571 yards used more than bought in 2024

I sewed 2 days last week. I went to an open sew for a little while. It was good to see everyone.

I have tried to add a few strips of wool every day, hoping that it will eventually help finish this wonderful rug. The Christmas tree is a fun diversion.

I have chosen simple ways to participate in  light the world with love for this Christmas season. I have many reasons to be grateful this year. I have shared  my love with friends, donated canned goods to a food bank, chatted with a friendly stranger at radiation therapy, played games with my family.  Hope you can find ways to share your heart with others. And thank you all for your wonderful comments and thoughts this year. Quilters are the best.

Jos checkers assembly

I don't have any finishes this week, but, I am still trying to tie up loose ends for my rainbow scrap challenge projects this year. Each month, as the color is called, I have made 2 vertical rows of scraps for the quilt I have called jos checkers. I have 18 columns. I didn't finish the greens during that month and need to sew them. I have started the colors design layout. I am not sure if I will have the top ready yet this year. If not, I will continue by sewing rows by color and month in 2025. I laid it out on my bed, and realized it is bigger than I thought. I may alter the size.

red tiny tuesday sampler

I had one block to finish for the red row for my tiny Tuesday sampler. I started this in 2019 as part of the rainbow scrap challenge. I had a few blocks that were not finished.  I pulled this older ufo out of the closet as part of my 5 quilt project. Here is the pink row.

As part of light the world I have been thinking more about how to be more aware of others at this time of year. I donated canned goods to a food bank, and made muffins for the really great ladies at my radiation treatments.

5 quilt November

 last report November 1, 2024

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. My top priority this year are the quilts in the to be quilted closet.

I emptied my 'to be quilted' closet this month. I started the year with 34, and they are all quilted. That is such a relief and very freeing. Hopefully, now, I will just be ready to quilt any UFOs I finish, when I finish them. I am still planning on doing the 5 quilt project next year to finish older ufos. I have chosen 24 projects randomly. Seven of them, I will pretend are starting something new, even though, there has been some kind of work on them. Five of them just need assembly of the blocks, and the rest need piecing work.

I finished 4 ufos in November

I wanted to finish 2 quilts In the 'to be quilted closet' before I did any other UFOs.  I did finish both of my goal ufo quilts this month and emptied the closet.

1. Lozenges 11/24

2. split nine patch 11/24

83 x 96

3. country roads is finished

90 x 90

4. baby 30s is finished

54 x 54

I worked on these older Ufos to finish them

1. midnight flight - was my one monthly goal for November was to finish all the star blocks. This month, I assembled the quilt to the inner border. The outer border is a pieced border, and then, I will finish it this month, fingers crossed, as my  my one monthly goal for December

2. scrappy twirl no new progress and it is still hanging on my design wall.

3. tiny tuesday - finish the blocks and start the rows

yes, a pig

4. charming stars - needs sashing and assembly

5. grandpas star - needs assembly - I am moving this to the new year

6. I have found my kaleidoscope quilt again and will add it in with the others. It needs the borders
