one monthly goal finish

I have the top done for my civil war edition of En Provence. This was last year's Bonnie Hunter mystery. This is a finish for my one monthly goal at Elm street quilts. So far I have met my goal 10 out of 11 months and really exceeded my expectations for the year, not that I wouldn't love to have finished 100 more quilts, but I am finishing.
We have had sunshine the last 2 days and it has been enjoyable to be outside.Still cold and in the 40s, but the sun makes everything better. The quilting for this will have to wait until next year.
Now that it is sock weather, I notice alot of thread on the bottom of the sock, which explains the thread in all the far reaches of the house.

It's a mystery

I have begun the new Bonnie Hunter mystery On Ringo Lake. I have had a slow start, and I am only to the starch stage. I decided after I had found and gathered my strips for part 1, that I would try starching this year as a new exploration. We had a guild speaker this year, and she was adamant that it would make a difference in our accuracy. I didn't remember and decide until AFTER I had cut. Next time, I will try to calculate and soak the fabric in 1:2 liquid starch. We shall see if this makes any difference. It will be fun experiment.

I have a few parts of boxy stars ala patriotic ready to sew together. I blogged about the endless 2 1/2 inch strip bin here.

over Thanksgiving I haven't found much time to sew, so I am trying to play " what was I thinking" with my projects
En provence is nearly ready to quilt - I need a back and binding.
cheddar sampler has not moved much from here.
The triangles are done for Holy Toledo
I am sewing the glitter blocks into pairs

stash report November 26, 2017

There were a few black Friday specials with fabric. I also bought a kit from Craftsy that hasn't come yet, so I don't have to count it yet.

I made cinnamon raisin bread yesterday  yum! It was almost too sweet, so I will cut back on the sugar and raisins next time. I didn't get the picture before "someone" ate half the loaf.

I dyed some cream colored wool to get a background I would like better for my Poppy rug. I was very happy with what I got. Dyeing is a little like magic. No idea if it will be the right bunny pulled out of the hat.  better ....

than...
I've added the piping so I can finish hooking it. I don't think it will take long.

Stash report

Fabric Used this Week 1 yard

Fabric Added this Week: 10 yards

patriotic quilt start

I've had a chance to start the patriotic boxy star quilt. despite the bleeding issues here and the holiday busyness, I like them. Boxy stars is a free pattern at Quiltville.blogspot.com

I have several ready for the sew and flip corners. When I am done I should have 160 bonus 2 inch triangles to use in another project.

In between, I have been sewing 1/2 square triangles for Holy Toledo quilt that I started a while ago and discovered I had not cut enough triangles to finish.

Stash report November 19, 2017

I've had a little trouble staying focused on any one thing. Which makes it difficult to blog about anything. I spent some time at Grandparen'ts day in Martinsville.
We watched Matthew and Quinn perform

Stash report

Fabric Used this Week 2 yards
Fabric Used year to Date: 353 1/2 yards

Fabric Added this Week: 0 yards
Fabric Added Year to Date: 353 1/4 yards

Net Fabric for 2017: 3/4 yards added more than used.

I am hooking this as a chair pad for the dining room. It is an old vintage kit that I bought on Ebay. It included the wool to hook it but in a size 3 or 4. Very tiny, so I will be changing the backgrounds to something else that I can cut bigger so it might get done in my lifetime.

early Christmas present

Hubby made an early Christmas present, and I am soooo excited. I dread ironing big quilts on a regular ironing board...
 He cut the plywood 22 x 62
We used 4 layers of batting and an old wool blanket. It works like a dream.I tried it on my finished top of En Provence. What I noticed is, that as I sprayed water on it, I was able to iron it dry better. I won't be able to quilt this for this month's one monthly goal as I have 5 customer quilts to do first, and they are for Christmas. I am so grateful they are not waiting until the last minute. So mine will have to wait.

On my list for next year's rainbow scrap challenge is Almost Amish by Jo and Kelli Kramer ( Jo's Country junction) I have it all cut and ready to go. It fits in the brown month.

borders

It is all ready for borders. I had to really give myself a talking to get it this far. I love it, but I just don't want to sew it. En Provence with civil war fabrics...
I have been working on my Poppy rug/pillow
I don't like the background that I bought. I think it is too dark. you can see it between the leaves and the flower at the bottom. So I am thinking I will try to dye something a little lighter. But I also need to pick the accent fabric for the piping and the back. Right now I like the grunge at the top. What do you like?

red, white, blue

I have let my 2 1/2 inch strip bins get overfull. I can't close the drawers  they are in by color. Blue and red are the fullest. No problem,  I'll just cut a quick red, white, and blue donation quilt.

I decided on boxy stars, since it is quick and easy and I could just grab a bunch of strips and cut 2 1/2 in squares and 4 1/2 inch rectangles, and 6 1/2 inch rectangles.  There was no appreciable difference in the drawers of strips sigh...
This was just a group I used to cut, there is more in the drawer....

After I had 80 small blockscut  to make 20 big blocks, I was reading somewhere about a blogger with bleeding fabric issues in her quilt. Oh Oh... both red and blue are notorious for bleeding. No problem. I'll just dunk them in water being careful not to agitate the strips and cause ravelies.
Bummer ... The blue water was very blue, and the red water was very red. I am glad I caught that before it was a quilt, but will that be good enough? I am a scrappy quilter. This poses a problem.

I gave the washed quilt pieces some fan time on the dining room table. So much for quick and mindless.

They were keeping marigold blossoms company. These were drying for dyeing wool, but that's another story.

Boxy stars is a free pattern that can be found here.

scrappy rag rug

I have finished another rag rug using my homemade rug loom. I had an entire bucket of fabric that didn't make the cut even for a string quilt, so I used them in this rug. It measures 28 x 38 inches and lays so perfectly flat on the floor. That is why I love them better than crochet or braided rag rugs. The technique is called twining.
I made the frame here.

I have a new quilt on the frame with a music theme.

stash report November 12, 2017

My Uncle was a fighter pilot in WW2. My brother was in the navy. I am not sure about any other military in our family. But I am grateful for the service of all who have saved this great nation and it's freedoms.

A little grunge, a little civil war and some airplanes. I am slowly sinking into the negative side of stash management.

I finished a customer quilt for fall.

Stash report

Fabric Used this Week 7 yards

Fabric Added this Week: 7 1/4yards

I am ready for the background on this rug hooking project. I think I will be making  pillow. I will be able to get just a bit of the background in today for slow stitching.

Rainbow scrap challenge

I just haven't been quilting. So the best I can do for the rainbow scrap challenge today is think ahead to next year. I have decided I want to make this quilt that has been on my bucket list for a long time. It is Tokoyo subway by Elizabeth Hartman. Pattern can be purchased here. I downloaded mine from her website when it was free.

I am not sure how I will do it rainbow scrap challenge way yet. I could just sew the columns together in each month of the color and then combine when I have all the colors in the block.

I am skimming through my wish list for possible next year projects, and I have paid special attention to these dark quilts for inspiration

Em's scrab bag

I want to make wanderlust by Bonnie Hunter

and this brown and blue  star struck

I have had this on the list all year from Ecclectic abuela

and I adore this one

all dark and I want to make them all. Now if I can just sit at a machine.
Other rainbow scrap challenge inspiration found here. What about next year for you?

donation quilt

I have a finish. Planes are flying off to a family services organization as part of our guild's year long donation drive. I started this in September and blogged about it here. I really like this pattern for fabric with a directional print.

I had a chance to try a diamond string block. I am not sure the center is right. But I can get it.
