green week 5 hsts ditch

It is the end of May and time to put away ditch lilies for the rainbow scrap challenge. In a month I have cut all the pieces for the quilt and I even had a chance to dig and find some 1 1/2 inch hsts. They will finish at 1 inch. I need 640 of them for the quilt.

While I am working on a snowball project, I can use the cut off pieces to make 1/12 inch hsts. And I am working on a basket quilt that uses 2 inch hsts. I can cut the ones that are too small down to 1 1/2.

My May PHD report

scrap cutting

I have added another goal to the 5 quilts project. I want to take one day a month and cut scraps. I will have plenty to choose from since I really didn't cut any for 2024, and the bags of uncut scraps are piling up, all over the fabric room.
I cut a big scrap bag for May. The original box weighed 9 pounds 13 ounces of shirtings scraps. The cut pieces weighed 1 pound 4 ounces which is 4 yards of useable fabric. 2025- totals so far 16 1/2 yards of useable fabric

quilts to be quilted:

1. wedding ring I have had this ready for a few years, but, I am afraid to quilt it myself. I want it to be special and I don't do special. So I will work to talk my self into it..... some day

progress monday

I have the side borders finished that make them a straight line for my scrappy twirl quilt.

And, this is the  plan for the top and bottom borders. This quilt is my own design and has been a headache from the start. I started out with 2 objectives. Use a seldom used template set - scrap crazy 6, and use up a pile of scraps from another quilt project. I thought I was so clever to combine the two. Geesh. A goal without a plan is a wish. And I wish I had had a plan LOL.

Because I had a long open sew day, I grabbed the easiest project on my ufo list to take, that would definitely last all day. This quilt is a Holy Toledo quiltville pattern from the book shirts and scraptails 2. It was all cut and ready to chain sew. I enjoyed the day sending fabric through the machine.

Last week's photo of my local Joann fabric store. How sad

stash report May 25, 2025

This has been a season of quilt sales. Many people are destashing. We had 2 of our quilter's estate sales. I can't remember a time with so many opportunities to go crazy. I can't get it all organized at this rate.

more green scraps

green is the rainbow scrap challenge for the month of May.

I am playing catch up on the 2 inch hsts I need for a basket quilt of the future. I need 70 of 10 different colors by the end of the year. I was only planning to do pink this month.

But, I was on a roll, and made blue, yellow, and green.

I finished my windmills blocks in green.

And, I cut 3 1/2 inch squares for ditch lilies. I still have time to work on the 1 1/2 hsts that I need for this quilt. I think by the end of the month, I will have it all cut and ready for another day.

fancy fox finish

Fancy fox is finished. I began this quilt in 2016 with my daughter during her visit home. This is an Elizabeth Hartman pattern. At the time I was also working on the fancy forest quilt. This year I pulled it from the deep ufo closet to add it to my 5 quilt project. All the blocks were already made, and, I needed to assemble the top and quilt it. I do adore the little foxes made from recycled shirts. This is also my one monthly goal for May.  Finishing an older UFo is such an unexpected pleasure. It has a history, a promise, and a surprise.

52 x 62 = 10 yards

zipper in rows

Once I started the rows for zipper blocks,   I didn't want to stop. I worked on the rows at an open sew, where I could start to lay them out where I could see them.

Before I went home, I had all the rows complete and basically arranged.  I pinned them in order. My plan next is to pin the rows together, one at a time, in the evenings while watching tv. This pattern goes together easily except the pinning every 2 inches to be sure the seams nest. This was an rainbow scrap challenge from 2023, and it is great to see it moving along to a finished quilt.

stash report May 18, 2025

I found these flannels at the last quilt sale I visited. They are 108 wide. She was completely selling all her fabric to move to a smaller home in Missouri. How very brave of her. I would probably keep the fabric and sell the pots and pans.

green scrap projects week 3

green is the rainbow scrap challenge color for May.

I did some catching up of  sugar grove blocks. I have 39 blocks so far- the goal is 72. I think I only have another 10 sets ready to go. I should have more from cutting last year..... I wonder where they are hiding.

I am behind on monkey wrenches. But, they are so cute.

blue

pink

Step 3 of ditch lilies was to cut 320 -1 1/2 inch squares. I used a few different neutrals.

I made strip sets of green and my light gray neutral for windmills.

fox top

I've made progress on my fox quilt . This is my one monthly goal for May. I worked on the vertical sashings, adding rows of foxes. The sashing is a vintage gray chambray fabric that I thought was perfect for the shirtings. I used the whole piece of fabric with just scraps left.

It needed a good pressing before I could measure the top and bottom border. It is ready for the longarm. I found a great backing. I hope to quilt it next week.

fancy foxes progress

I have the vertical rows sewn and have started adding sashing for my fox quilt . This my one monthly goal for May. So I need to move it along to be done in time. I really enjoy meeting each fox, they make me smile.  I haven't had a quilt on the longarm for awhile and it is getting restless. It was a brave man to wear the orange paisley shirt. haha

stash report May 11, 2025

I visited a quilt store in Rossville In. I saw this quilt. The centers are a shop hop fabric of Indiana state parks panel. I haven't started anything new in 2 years. Still, I wanted to add it to my list for the year.

green scrap projects week 2

green is the rainbow scrap challenge color for May.

I pulled out all the green rows of 8 blocks for zipper blocks , and finished them by adding another random foursie block. I now have 6 complete rows. hooray.

I used 3 wof 1 1/2 inch strips and made strip sets with a neutral. The  zigzag units are all done for May.

I cut the oranges for ditch lilies as part of the second step. Ditch lilies is an older Bonnie Hunter ufo that has green in it and I am making as much progress as I can in May. I cut the green last week.

cutting scraps for May

I found a box of scrappy leftovers of shirt fabric, that is my next project for scrap cutting. It weighed 9 pounds 13 ounces. I am trying to spend my time at Friday sew, once a month, to cut scraps.

I did manage to get last month's scraps combined with previous cuts. The piles are growing.

This month, I cut 1 pound 4 ounces before quitting. That is 4 yards of useable fabric. The total for the year is 16 1/2 yards.

box when I started this time

If there is a pocket on the shirt I cut straight across under the pocket and cut around it for pieces. Many times I can get a 10 inch square from the bottom piece. This month, I had a bigger stack of 5 inch squares, and last month, I had a bigger stack of 10 inch squares. I must be getting down to smaller pieces of shirts. I still think it will take 2 more months to empty the box.

I'm trying to minimize strings by cutting small squares, but by the end of the session, I am throwing more in the pile.
