Stash report Sept 3, 2017

I have hand sewed the handles on my hooked bag. The leather was hard to sew through for my hands, but I like the look.

I used the handles from this Goodwill bag since they were in great shape and much cheaper than new.

A friend gave to me a garbage bag of "scraps" that someone gave to her. I feel the need to rescue them, but I have no plans to actually measure and count yardage. so I am going to say 5 yards. I imagine that is conservative. Everyone has a different definition of scraps. In The small quilt group I belong to, one of my quilty friends saves 2 piles of scraps, one for me and one for the trash. I usually take them both, because she has a very different definition of scrap. What do you think?

I save strips that are at least an inch, squares at least 2 inches, but I will cut squares down from 1 1/2  inches if I need them. I will save trianglely pieces for string piecing. But these pieces are much bigger than that. I am so grateful for the little pieces. They just make me happy. until I can't fit any more into my house....sigh....

Stash report Aug 27, 2017

I found some oldies but goodies at a street fair this week

I just love the older fabric. And the colors will fit in anywhere in a quilt. The one on the left looks like a fabric Jen Kingwell would use in her quilts. I came of age quilting during the floral era, so I will always love them, but I am saving some of them for Bonnie Hunter's floribunda quilt

The sides of the wool bag have to be hand stitched with linen thread wrong sides together. I can only do this a little at a time or it hurts my hands. I do not want to have hurting hands sigh...
If i finish that today, I have the handles to hand stitch to the bag. so exciting....

rug hooking again

I haven't been to my rug hooking guild in a while. I have a hard time staying put for so long. As much as I love my friends there, I just have a hard time concentrating right now. Must be Spring fever. cue Julie Andrews scene singing "the hills are alive with the sound of music" Only no hills -no orchestra -no Julie Andrews.
I kept my visit short, just to keep up with the hatches, matches, and dispatches. I did get a bit more hooked on my Irish Beach bag. It won't be long before I face the dreaded sewing it into a bag.

I have been putting wild and goosey together. I decided I needed a few extra partial blocks, ooops.
Something isn't quite right...

I see some ripping in my future. I have the rows in sets of two.

Moving forward

I attended the annual Gathering of quilters Saturday with a friend. I had a wonderful time and brought home some treasures that I will share later.
I worked a bit on my One Monthly Goal and March Ufo - Fancy Forest. I had the blocks all pieced and have to add sashings. I really dislike this part. It is when the fat hits the fan so to speak. This is when I wish I had been a bit more fiddley with my piecing, and that it would just automatically be the right size and magically go together. But it isn't and doesn't.
I will take it slowly and be more focused when I work on it.
I have started the background on my rug hooking project. I just couldn't wait until it was all hooked to see if I would like the black, and I do. It gives it a more modern look I think.

Rug hooking

Our rug hooking guild meeting was fun as someone is getting close to a finish. This is Vivian's rug.

I have been adding some of the little doodads to mine before I can take off onto the background.

My goal to work on my Marie Webster American Beauty Rose quilt everyday in February, started with cutting the big hunks of interfacing apart. And the interfacing just kept coming and coming..... sigh...

Procrastination

I have struggled of late with lack of motivation and procrastination. There is a natural let down after the holidays, and all my loves going back to their normal lives. I used to think I was not cut out to be a Mom and now I think I was not cut out to be an empty nester.  sigh...
Our days are too cold and dark, or cold, rainy, and dark. I haven't seen sunshine in a few days. I am finally recovering from the plague we have had. I think I can start to be among the living, and not infect them with dreadful germs. It was not the flu as we all had our shots. I have missed my rug hooking group, and my small quilt groups.

I am setting goals for cleaning my desk and the laundry room of 10 min a day. My desk is a pile of stuff chronologically organized. LOL The laundry room is full of all the beddings and linens from our family visits that needs to be laundered and find their way back to their homes. Because they are big items, it is going rather slowly.

I think I have been gob stopped by the biggies of quilt bleeding disaster, loss of borders for my monthly project, and a hand knitted sock misfortune. I am a little unsettled, as my husband has gone back to work after 8 weeks sick leave. So it has been awhile since I have had my own routines. I must have forgotten them.

I am sure I will perk up any time now.

I have been working on my rug hooking project. I want to get the big sections done on the other side of my bag, before I fill in the little places.

I love a quiltathon day 4

I was very good this week and resisted alot of temptation at Missourri Star Quilt Co. I have been sick and it has been bitterly cold, so I really wanted to order something, but didn't. Go me.
I've cut alot of fabric this week, but I am waiting to count it when the projects are finished.

Fabric Used this Week: 0 yards
Fabric Used year to Date:  108 yards
Fabric Added this Week: 2 yards
Fabric Added Year to Date: 2 yards
Net Fabric for 2017: 106 yards used

While my daughter was here, I grabbed 2 boxes of odd fabric from the attic, and we played the "you pick one and I will pick one" game. 90 yards of fabric went home with her and 18 yards went to goodwill. Her husband doesn't see the fascination with all this fabric. This should help me see better numbers on my stash accounting for awhile. She took some ugly fabric to me and was delighted and giggly.

I bought 2 yards of fabric at quilt expression in Noblesville, In. I really "love" this fabric

I have had to hide my rug hooking project from curious Grandchildren, it will be a sweet pleasure to get it out and start again.
Judy at Patchwork times is having a quiltathon and I have been working on projects for that. I hope to cut my civil war version of En provence for 64 1/2 square triangles.

cut Carolina Chain all finished
turquoise hourglasses all finished
quilt on the frame
en provence 1/2 square triangles for the bright version all finished
purple rainbow challenge blocks nearly done
Christmas all put away
knit the sky is current
still looking for 2 border pieces for my tumbler - they could be anywhere swept up in any bucket ;(

Dyeing for Christmas

cheesy title hey?
I need some bright colored wool for my newest rug hooking project. So it's time to whip out the dye pots. It's been awhile since I have dyed on purpose, so I have to recheck google.
I am aiming for a chartreuse green , using what I have on hand.

Not a brilliant time to start a dyeing project, but I need just a bit to finish a motif that I might have sit down time to sneak in the Christmas mix.
Cross our fingers.

Resting from Christmas

This bottleneck is off the frame and ready to handsew the binding. I needed to get Peter's quilt on and done by Christmas.
I watched 2 Christmas movies last night. My husband has gone back to work after sick leave, and I just wanted to sit. I need rest this time of year after trying to do too much. But then I don't get it all done. sigh... It has been very cold here - in the single digits, not the sort of temperature I want to go out in any more. So I have more handwork done.
More rug Hooking. After a large rug, this is going very fast.
I finished these Christmas ear warmers for the kids and spouses.
And this is my third try at this pair of socks. new to me is toe up, and Judy's magic cast on, and a stitch called KW2. I think I have it this time.

Keeping Up

I am playing keep up with the holiday fast approaching. If you notice the large section of gray near the needles on my scarf, I will tell you that those gray skies are seriously messing with my sanity. I don't mind snow, I mind the days without sunshine. The older I get, the more I miss sunshine, and turn into bah humbug.

I do enjoy watching Christmas movies, no matter how lame. So I can get more done on my rug hooking project.
I finished November and December swap hexies last night while watching Merry Kissmas.
Both are destined for the UK. I mailed the November hexies without a photo.

My quilting room is a mess with fabric flying for the EN Provence mystery quilt, and Christmas gifts. I have one of my quilts stuck on the quilting frame with no idea how to quilt it. And I have 4 customer quilts waiting that they don't want until after Christmas. I look forward to the start of a new year with new quilting goals. I have already been moving some of my WIPs to UFO status and setting goals to finish them. I've read about some quilters who do One Monthly Goal at Elm Street quilts and I am interested in the Rainbow Scrap challenge. What do you do to stay motivated.

Something new

As a rug hooker, a project can take awhile to finish. And with wool often 35.00 a yard, I can't see starting too many projects at once in case they languish or don't finish. It's an investment, and I need to see it through. I can't just run to the wool store for a quick fix either ( like quilting), so it takes planning ahead. I bought this pattern for a carpet bag 2 years ago from Merry hooker woolens. I took a year to pick up pieces of wool and/or dye some. And now that my Christmas rug is finished, pressed, and waiting for the cleaning up stage, I can start this wonderful project.

The linen is great for working. I am using a size 5 strip and maybe a size 4 in the smaller places. I needed to topstitch the bag bottom and tops to linen, so that I can hook right to the edge.
The green was a part of a bundle that looked like Easter eggs. The purple is a pair of pants I found at Goodwill. I love the bits of pink.

I have been working on the Christmas rug for most of the year, so it is always fun to start something new.
