one monthly goal recap

 I want to revisit my goals for the month of August and see how I have done. It's hard to believe we are at the end of another month. And today is my 44th wedding anniversary.

For August, I want to continue work on stella cyranna. I have the pieced rows finished, and it is time to assemble and work on the wool applique.
I had trouble with the instructions on the wool applique. I have only a picture to go by, and to me, the amount of wool is not adequate for the color combinations I am seeing.

I want to quilt roll roll cotton boll. I found a backing, so I need to make the binding, and, I have two customer quilts, and then I can quilt it.

It's quilt show time for the guild, so a couple of other quilts snuck in front of Roll roll for quilting, but I have entered it into the show, so it will be done.

I want to string piece for orca bay ( here are other images) for the next mystery quilt finish.

I have all the blue string blocks finished. There are 72 and now I move on to red string pieced blocks.

I need to decide borders on snow days and prepare to quilt. I think it will be a while until I quilt it.
Nothing decided. I was distracted by the double wedding ring quilt along.

I've been pinning and pinning and sewing for double wedding ring quilt along with Jo of Jo's Country junction.  Did I say pinning?

Last week's assignment was to join two melons together with a small seam between the squares. I only have 20 to 30 ready for that stage. I took the time to join more small pieces together and add to melons as time permitted.

It doesn't look like much yet, but, it will be a real quilt someday.

I am ready for today's instructions and joining one ring to the center. This part seems a little intimidating, but I'm ready.

Our quilt guild is hosting a quilt show in October. Most of our meetings until then will be all the last minute planning and organizing. Tonight, we will have a member round robin. Our quilt entry forms are due to tonight, and I need to make decisions about which quilts I want to enter.

I know I want to enter wild and goosey. Beyond that, I don't know

mystery strings

I've trimmed a few and de-papered a few blue string blocks for Orca Bay mystery quilt.

I just can't like string piecing. I try.  But, I don't enjoy string piecing. While I am sewing these, I am planning how I will just take my tub and dump it into the trash.
I need to remember, I don't like a foundations this small -31/2 inch square. I don't like the triangle corners - I have to really hunt for pieces that are big enough. I don't like having one color I have to sort and find. I don't like the explosion of mess.

But, I enjoy the finished product. I enjoy using the leftover bits. Then, I remind myself,  I do like crumb piecing aka mile a minute piecing, and all these leftovers will be used in that way. I have an entire list of crumb quilts, I still want to make on my inspiration board.

I saw this recently, and I liked it.... I found it here on kit & cat quilts with a tutorial. nice

I really like the tulip quilt that Jo is showing today and I can't imagine it with any other background than the strings, so, maybe, I still have one more in my future. Jo is trying to finish all the quilts in quiltville's string fling book before the new book is published. I am trying to finish all the mystery quilts as part of that challenge before the new mystery in November, so I am going to keep going.

Trying to stay with just orange this month, I made choices for squared away block. Two of them, I liked but the small dot, and the slightly darker orange print, ummm no.

this is me sewing in the middle of my double wedding ring mess. Which is why I hadn't worked on the squared away blocks until the last minute.

 I didn't want to mess with my piles for the double wedding ring, but stuff was mixing up any way, so I did a bit of cleanup. And finally, we had blocks.

And with that, the last 4 of the glitter blocks are done. I checked the dimensions, and I may want it bigger, but, not by making any more of these blocks. The blocks were not hard but challenging. And I did get into a rhythm when putting them together. I will have to get creative.

I wonder if I might like to add vertical bands. Although I like them altogether. It was a magical day outside for photos. Most of these blocks were made from scraps from a quilter's estate.

In our Friday group, we have the chairman of our guild's charity quilt program. We are all inspired by her willingness to share. This was recently made by one of our members for the police program. Boy quilts are always on short supply. In Indiana the colts are boss.

This is a donation quilt for the women's shelter. that I am quilting for a friend.

This is a part of our sew along for Jen Kingwell's drops of jupiter. These blocks were made by Linda.

I have all the pieces sewn for the Quiltville leader and ender challenge. I have made 7 blocks, but I have decided to put it away for awhile, as I have the double wedding ring quilt to use as leader and enders. I am afraid I have too many projects started and, I am overwhelmed with keeping track of the next steps. That is, usually, the clue it is time to pare back what I am working on, and make a couple projects the priority. I try to keep my eye focused on the one monthly goals and the rainbow challenges.

it looks like a double wedding ring

It is time for the double wedding ring quilt along. Every Wednesday, Jo of Jo's country junction encourages us to make a double wedding ring quilt, which has been on my bucket list.

I spent a good bit of time finishing a batch of about 40 arcs for the second side of a melon. I was adding an angled piece to each end of the 6 piece A arcs. In Jo's pattern there is just piece A, but using my template, I discovered that I need both an A and a B for the full arc.

Last week's assignment was to add a square to each end as well. I was able to use a standard  2 1/2 inch square for the square.

And it was time to add the second side of the melon. It didn't look like it was going to work at all.

But, hooray, we have a recognizable part of the double wedding ring quilt.

 and another - this part is very rewarding. I could just stare at it for hours. Maybe, I will just carry it around with me all day, and whip it out whenever I need a boost.

So far the quilt along has been great. The instructions are thorough, and the pictures are so helpful. And Jo has done a wonderful job of breaking down the tasks into believable chunks of work.

getting started with orca bay quilt

Roll roll Cotton boll is in the quilting cue waiting it's turn. And as much as I would like to completely finish it before starting the next quiltville mystery quilt, it could be awhile. So, I began planning orca bay. I was sure I had the string parts finished, but I can't find them anywhere or any mention of them in my master lists. I don't know how I missed this mystery quilt. I've done parts of all the others. Oh well. Time to start at the beginning. I was just going to cut the foundation papers and be very happy with my progress.

But, then, I wondered, do I really have any blue strips in the strip bin. um not very many, and the next thing I know, I am having a gay ole time digging in the strip bins ( yes more than one).

And the next thing was to see how a few blocks will look. - cute

And, by the time TV time was over, I had 29 finished. The hardest part was finding the blue strips.

stash report August 19, 2018

I found this bundle at goodwill for 3.00. I bought it for the wool piece. I planned to release the others into the wild ( send it back).

I tried the burn test on the wool and it had acrylic in it so I didn't need it. I was able to return it.

I found 4 yards of this flannel for 3.00 as well, and I knew it would make a great back. I even matched it to a quilt waiting to be quilted.
Otherwise, I would feel bad just adding fabric to my stash, after my daughter helped me get rid of so much fabric. So maybe that is the new rule.  I have to have a purpose for it.

I sewed at least 15 min every day this week except Monday - tooth day

My daughter helped move out 306 yards of fabric. We didn't count each piece, but, we weighed it, and it was a total of 100 pounds. There are usually 3 yards in every pound =300 yards. I know I won't even miss it.

Today I will work on my rug hooking project to slow things down a bit and collect my thoughts on my quilting for next week.

The plan for this month's birch trees was to do two light and two dark orange, but I didn't have another light orange. I am thinking it might be time to start assembling this quilt. I wanted 42 blocks - 6x7, and I might have that many now. A count is in order. And then a plan.

I worked on birch trees at Friday quilt group. Have you noticed how much faster a project goes when in the company of other quilters?

Since Linda and I are also working on our wedding ring quilts. Sue brought her Mother's double wedding ring quilt to share with us. It was spectacular. We are thinking the fabrics look more like the 40s and 50s. Sue remembers that her Mother didn't want to make the center white in case it would yellow, so she chose pink.

It's hand pieced and hand quilted. What a treasure.
