frolic block

Finally, I can see how a frolic mystery quilt block looks in my fabrics. It is a very involved  block.

I have made a couple of them, trying to get a rhythm going. I am very concerned that I am going to twist or turn something.

These are not done quickly. So, I will be at this awhile.
In other news, I have started rug hooking my snow man rug again.
The snowmen are so cute. I am trying to hook at least one wool string everyday. It's doable.

shirts

I had stopped buying thrift store shirts. I had plenty, and was tired of cutting them apart. And, I still don't have a tried and true way to store them. If they are in boxes or plastic containers and stacked, I forget about them and forget to use them. But, I discovered a new to me blog of a quilter who uses recycled fabric and my interest was renewed. She has a lot of free patterns and I really like reading about her plans and thinking. Her free patterns are here. Her blog quilted twins is here. There is also a shop with discounted fabric.

I generally keep the fronts and backs together and folded in whatever I keep them in so they stay nice. I keep the yokes, and sleeves separate to cut down right away.  I have been cutting squares from the sleeves at 9 1/2, 8 1/2, and 7 1/2 inches. The leftovers go into a tub with the yokes for cutting into strips or triangles.
It is getting harder and harder to find 100% cotton shirts any more, evidently, the last manufacturing trend is back to cotton and polyester. I find it is best to get them from a regular thrift store since goodwill has gotten expensive, in my opinion. These are leftover pieces of sleeves after cutting the squares. There is probably a whole quilt just in the leftovers.

shoofly

Yesterday, I shared about digging through triangles, to find candidates for the shoofly block. It has helped increase my shoofly blocks in number. So has making blocks for frolic mystery quilt. While I am piecing a frolic block, I can get 3 shoofly blocks finished.

I have decided I am not spending a lot of time on pressing these until, I know how they will join together. That way I can be sure seams will nest. Shoofly is a free pattern at quiltville.blogspot.com for this year's leader/ ender challenge. They finish at 4 inches, I think.

The point of a leader ender challenge is to have something ready to feed through the machine before or after whatever is the actual project. These are a little more challenging in that to keep the sets together, I feel like I have to chain the whole block. I am using small waste triangles and can't always get a set for the corners, but I think they are still charming.

triangles

I have been digging through scraps to find triangles for wonky stars and shoofly. I found this bag of triangles, and, decided to sort through it, and, decide if they were worth keeping. Silly thought, I think every piece of fabric is worth keeping, that is why my sewing room is always a mess. These triangles were left overs from quilt wild and goosey.

I discovered that most of the triangles are at least 4 1/2 inches with some 3 1/3 inch, and a few 2 1/2 inch. I don't recognize the fabric from anything I have done, so, it must have been a scrap giveaway.
I ran the triangles through the accuquilt and had this when I was done. Now, I need to find a place to store them or a pattern to use them. fun dilema.

I am trying to make a to do list on Tuesdays with home sewn by us

frolic 8

Frolic 7 is done, and, now, frolic 8 is done. And I really hope ( fingers crossed) that I have the sets together. I was surprised there was so much left to cut in frolic 9.

I am getting closer and closer to seeing a block.

stash report Feb 2, 2020

I am thinking I will do a stash report monthly instead of weekly.
Every time I try to use a coupon at Joann fabrics, I don't find anything not on sale, but, I come home with remnants. My rule for remnants is that the fabric has to be on sale in the first place, so that it is half off the sale price for the remnant. The better the sale on the fabric, the more tempting the remnant. My favorite thread was on sale, too. I really like the coats and clarks for paper piecing. It is 50 weight and yet strong.

I try not to be tempted by flannels, but they were 2.24 a yard and then half off the remnants. I thought these would play nicely with anything I might already have in my stash. Total at Joann was 5 yards.

There was also a great day at goodwill. It seems that there has been a long dry spell. But, I found these great pieces in one trip.  The light blue piece is a flannel. I was thinking backs for the solid colors. They have non- fabric people working on the fabric. Right now, I have to leave a lot of fabric. I have been seeing 1 yard pieces marked 8.99, and Joann fabric marked for more than I could buy it at Joann. They have scrap pieces for 1.99. On the other hand, the blue solid was 3 yards for .99 cents. If I mention it to the staff, they say there are guidelines, but, if the person doesn't understand fabric.....
It will sort itself out, but I don't need any, so I pass.

Stash report

Fabric Used this month 23.75 yards
Fabric Used year to Date: 23.75 yards

Fabric Added this month: 25 yards
Fabric Added Year to Date: 35 yards
net fabric: 11.25 yards bought more than used

The best time for me to sit at the sewing machine is first thing in the morning, before there are any plans.

For slow sunday stitching, I finished the hooking for this little rug hooking project. But, I need to turn under the edges, and, hand stitch the back to it. I look forward to seeing all the projects at Kathy's quilts.

stars and one monthly goal

My 2 1/2 inch square bin in green has been depleted. yay. I was left with  just a bit of olive green or lighter green. I decided I would cut more squares in the olive green category for last month's rainbow challenge scraptastic stars. I completely forgot this block for my rainbow scrap quilts.

I used that as an excuse to dig out another green scrap bucket and sort and cut. I think there is only one more green bucket left hiding somewhere.

And on to orange for February. I don't have any extra scrap buckets with orange. I only have my working basket with orange. Apparently, I don't buy much orange. I don't think it comes up at thrift stores very often.

My February one monthly goal x5

1. cut editya sitar flower box kit
2. quilt woven checkerboard
3. quilt sand castles
4 keep current with rainbow scrap challenge
5. frolic 9
