scrappy mountain majesties finish

My paper work says I started this quilt in 2016 and that all the blocks were sewn. It was planned as a boy donation quilt. This is a free Bonnie Hunter pattern available at Quiltville called scrappy mountain majesties. I finished it in 2021 as part of the 5 quilts project, and it made it's way to the 'to be quilted' closet. I started quilting it the last of May, and, now, it is finished.

65 x 72 = 14 yards

I used riley blake fabric that I bought while visiting my daughter in Utah.

I used a soft royal blue flannel for the back and loopy circles quilting. This is my 17th finish for 2024.

5 quilts December 6, 2021

 My 5 quilts progress report.

I am happy for a new week and a new start on my quilts.

1. boho heart -I finished one block this week - very slow going

2..full stop quilt that Angela is doing for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I decided I wanted to add a little something to my full stop quilt - words of explanation

3. rhododendren mystery - hunter -clue one is finished - I have started cutting for clue 2

4. fish school - this is a year long project for the quiltville leader/ender challenge. After a big push of cutting, I have started putting a few blocks together.

I used a random number generator , and this is the project that came up for my empty 5th spot.

5. kaleidoscope paper pieced - I found this at a guild rummage sale a few years ago. Usually,  I don't like paper piecing. But it looked simple enough.  I pulled it out and sorted through it. There were 6 blocks finished and enough paper patterns for a nice quilt. I left it out for a bit as I made my decisions. I would walk by it and think. I decided I am keeping the finished blocks, but I am passing the project on to guild. Maybe someone will want to do it.  I just found the quickest way to "finish" an old ufo.

I have a donation quilt listed on etsy - money to be donated to the rescue mission food bank

5 quilts november 29

 My 5 quilts progress report.

1.checkered past -The top is finished and I am preparing the backing and binding before it goes in the quilting pile.      And then, it won't be on the list anymore.   Here is a link to the finish top.

2. fish school - this is a year long project for the quiltville leader/ender challenge.

3. scrappy mountain majesties - I added a border to the scrappy quilt. I used chunks of leftover fabric from the top. Next I will find a back and prepare the binding, and send it off to the "to be quilted" closet. It's exciting to finish all the piecing on a quilt, but a little discouraging that I have so many yet to be quilted
This will be leaving the list too

4. boho heart -I  cut many 1 1/2 inch strips in neutral and made a hexie. I cut the background too small so I will have to add a frame.

5.full stop quilt that Angela is doing for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy.- I made the periods this week, but, I didn't join them until I know how I want to make them in the quilt. I am missing one of the months, but, I couldn't find it at so scrappy, yet. And, I just had an idea of how to make this simple quilt more complicated....sigh

In an effort to reduce my jelly roll population, I have added this jelly roll to my etsy store

My next on the longarm of my own quilts in the 'to be quilted' closet

1. wonky courthouse - hunter - need to piece a back and prepare the binding - on the frame - quilted - needs bound

2. hourglass leader ender challenge - hunter - piecing the backing and binding

5 quilts November 22, 2021

We have spent the last few days cooking turkey. We decided to smoke one this year. I decided that if the price didn't drop below the price of a chicken, I wasn't going to buy it. We aren't having anyone for thanksgiving, so I would only buy one for the freezer. The price was good so Mr. Turkey is all safely gathered in for the winter. We have already had "leftovers" - sandwhiches - and soon, noodles. yum. I miss family thanksgiving dinners.

My 5 quilts progress report.

1.checkered past -The top is together and I am looking at border options

2. fish school - this is a year long project for the quiltville leader/ender challenge. I cut some more hsts last week and started putting them together. A few a day will keep the shark away.

3. scrappy mountain majesties -  I have the center rows together and I need to add borders.

4. boho heart -I am trying to concentrate on the blocks and strips I need for the first section of group 1. My section 1 is almost all pink and red. I am missing 2 blocks that I need to make before the whole section can be pieced. I did get this small section together at friday group

5.full stop quilt that Angela is doing for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy - I made the dreaded question mark blocks.  all I need are the period blocks and I will be caught up with the blocks. I would like to get the top done before the end of the year.

My next on the longarm - I used a random number generator to make the list. I have 42 quilts I need to quilt.

1. wonky courthouse steps - hunter - need to piece a back and prepare the binding - it is on the frame

2. hourglass leader ender challenge - hunter

5 quilts November 15

Hubby and I attended a small quilt show in Indy Saturday, It was a great little trip that put us in Indy. It has been awhile since we have been to the "big" city and it was a bit overwhelming. The traffic and massively growing areas were surprising. We hardly recognized the place.

We stopped at a quilt store that I enjoy, and I was sad to see the cost of fabric has really increased. There was no shortage of options, and the store was busy. Now that we are retired, we avoid most places on the weekend, so it was a little hectic to us. I am glad I have "curated" a stash to play with at home, and I don't feel the need to buy pricey fabric. But, I wonder what impact that will have on new quilters and the industry.

My 5 quilts progress report.

1.checkered past -All the blocks are together and I am planning a piano key border. I can use the leftover bits and clean up some scraps at the same time. The sashing acts as the inner border. no change at all from last week... none

2. fish school - this is a year long project for the quiltville leader/ender challenge. I am keeping up with a few each week. I had sewn all I had, so, I needed to cut some more. There should be 150 hsts in this stack = 50 blocks. The next time I cut, I will need to start with strips.

3. scrappy mountain majesties - I have all the rows done and I am starting to join the rows. There are a lot of seams to match - a lot

4. boho heart -I am trying to concentrate on the blocks and strips I need for the first section of group 1. Then, I can assemble them. In my quilt they will be pink and red.

5. tiger quilt - the top is finished and I am working on the back and binding. I like to have that all ready before I send it to the "to be quilted" closet. It is small 38 x 44.

so much fun.

My next on the longarm

1. on the go - donation quilt - is quilted- needs to be bound

2. wonky courthouse - hunter - need to piece a back and prepare the binding

3. hourglass leader ender challenge - hunter

4, end of the rainbow rsc

2. fish school - this is a year long project for the quiltville leader/ender challenge. I am keeping up with a few each week. I have sewed all I had cut, so I need to cut some more.

3. scrappy mountain majesties - I started the layout on the library floor meeting room. I took apart a couple of rows and inserted the new blocks with a different background. The end pieces were the challenge. I had to keep checking that I had the angles right. I labeled each row and look forward to sewing them all together

4. boho heart -I have finished week 5 out of 9, but at this point I will concentrate on the pink and red section. I think that will be easier for me with the rainbow version.

5. tiger quilt - still working on the piano key borders

5 quilts progress

1.checkered past -I have sewed a sashing to the right side of all the blocks. the next step is to join the blocks into rows using the sashings. I got this far at an open sew saturday.

2. fish school - this is a year long project for the quiltville leader/ender challenge. I have made a goal to sew 10 blocks before I can move on to the next quilt. I finished the 10 and added a few more.

4. boho heart -I finished week 4 of boho heart and I am working on week 5. I sat and made lists and decided how I am going to proceed and made a few kits. The thinking is the hardest part - haha

5 quilts

It's time for me to plan the week and assess how I have done on my goals.  I have 5 quilts I am focusing on right now. I try to work on one task for each quilt at a time working through all five before moving on to the next set of tasks.

1.checkered past -The next step was to make 40 sashings. I sewed 1 1/2 inch creams to 1 1/2 inch shirt strips on the treadle. I pressed and subcut them to the size of the block. tada

But, then, I couldn't help myself, and, I had to try sewing it to the side of the block. That will be the next step. It fit, which when working with shirts, can sometimes be a miracle.

2. fish school - this is a year long project for the quiltville leader/ender challenge. I have made a goal to sew 10 blocks before I can move on to the next quilt. I got this far by using them as leader/ ender working on checkered past.

3. scrappy mountain majesties - I have cut new blocks for an old ufo, so, the next step is to sew the blocks together.

4. boho heart -I finished week 4 of boho heart and I am working on week 5. I sat and made lists and decided how I am going to proceed and made a few kits. The thinking is the hardest part - haha

5. tiger quilt - I added a white border to tiger tiger, I have a polka dot ready to add as the next step.

I made progress on all 5 quilts last week, but, I can't check all the boxes until I add the next border to tiger tiger and finish, make the blocks for scrappy mountain majesties, and finish fish school.

I bumped into a couple of customer quilts I need to do before I can get back to moving my own quilts along.

MY next on the longarm

1. on the go - donation quilt

2. wonky courthouse - hunter

3. hourglass leader ender challenge - hunter

3. scrappy mountain majesties is an older UFO I want to get to the top stage

4. boho heart is a QAL with my Friday quilting friends

5. tiger quilt

from November 2020. Linda brought a scrap bag to me.... I had found the tiger embroidery at a thrift store...I decided whatever I pulled out of the scrap bag, I would add to the quilt improv style. It has been fun. Some colors, I would not have put together on purpose. But, I like them together here. I think I saw a video on you tube by Beth Shibley from love laugh quilt that made a quilt this way. The last row here of fabric was on the freebie table at the quilt retreat. And I thought it could work.

I did a little cleaning of the bits around my sewing area.

scrappy mountain majesties ufo

For  my Friday quilt group, I dug out another UFO with the intent to move it along. It is always fun to open the project box and stare at a puzzle. My paper work says I started in 2016 and that all the blocks are sewn. It was planned as a boy donation quilt.

Each individual block was sewn but, I needed to sew them into bigger blocks, which I did.

Somehow I ended up with unmatched extra blocks. I saw two options. Make a smaller quilt with what I had, or, go bigger and cut some more. I didn't have any more of the background fabric, so, I decided to go bigger enough that a plain muslin will look planned if I mix it in with the others. I like bigger quilts anyway.

This is a free Bonnie Hunter pattern available at Quiltville called scrappy mountain majesties.
