finishing rainbow scrap challenge projects

I have all the big blocks for my red and brown pfeffernuesse quilt.

I made the last of the windmill blocks in black and gray for the rainbow scrap challenge.

I found over 100 odd colors of 2 inch hsts for my
bonnie Hunter basket quilt. This should finish up the year with more than the 700 I need for the quilt. I need to cut and make the bigger hsts for the basket in November.

stash report October 19, 2025

I am unpacking from a quilt show garage sale. The fabric was 6.oo a yard, a bit expensive for older fabrics, but, I found a few things. I know browns are not popular right now, but I still like them.

I sewed 2 days last week - I made it to Friday sew and Saturday open sew

I have created a new friendship swap for my rug hooking group. It is a swap rug. Everyone wanted houses this time. It has two rows of houses, and trees, too. We each do a house on our own rug, and then, we pass it around for everyone to hook a house on our rug, When we are done, we will have a rug with our friends hooking on it. I have made 2 or 3 others and they are such a treasure. We have a goal to trade every two weeks.

I think is the last house I need to make for someone else, and my rug has come back to me to finish. Pretty exciting. But, the real work on the rug begins. I have been playing with greens for dying wool for the trees, bushes, and grass. This house was for Jan.

progress on rainbow scrap challenge

It is time to start making big blocks for the red and brown pfeffernuesse quilt. All the blocks are either done or redone. I began by sewing twosies and webbing them together with their mates. I am excited to get this ufo this far. I did the red parts during red month for the rainbow scrap challenge. This month is brown, so, I pulled the project out again, since, the string blocks are brown.

I cut my windmill blocks in gray. I haven't counted to see if I have a enough for a good size donation quilt, yet.

I am scraping the bottom of the barrel for monkey wrench pieces that match. I either need to cut and do more next year, or say enough is enough.

I set up 4 more sugar grove blocks on flannel boards for easy grab and go sewing. I haven't done as many as I had planned this year. I think I am over half way. I am expecting to carry this on to next year's projects.

holloween kit

I was feeling halloweenish, and remembered a halloween kit, that I found at a garage sale. I had added it to my 5 quilt projects for 2025. I am not near it on the list, but, I thought it might be fun, at this time of the year, to at least look at it. It was a complete kit with a panel, fabric, and a pattern. I did not like the pattern. I started looking at ideas online. I found a couple I liked much better. For now, I am tabling the idea. I have made notes, and pictures, so that I can start again with a better idea for how to proceed. I do like the panel, and it offered me smile. It would be wise to start a bit earlier than October another year.

pfeffernuuse and zigzags

When I opened the box of an older ufo for the rainbow scrap challenge. I discovered that many of the hourglass blocks were turned the wrong way..... sigh  I unstitched them, and, resewed them correctly. It was an easy fix. I had flipped the top and bottom row of  2. One new seam, and, it was made to right.

I used smaller strips in odd colors to make for the zig zag quilt. I think I have about 500 little units. I've made them over the year, but, I didn't iron them open. I am guessing that was a big mistake. I started ironing this month, and it took forever. haha

baby xo finish

Last month, I restarted an older ufo for the rainbow scrap challenge. It was nearly finished, but needed borders and quilting. I was able to quilt it this week. It is a sweet baby quilt that looks soft and cuddly.  Baby x&o is a small quilt, I started in 2015. at a guild workshop. The hsts in the border were cutoffs from the snowball blocks. Fortunately, all the pieces and fabrics were still in the project box.

holy toledo progress

I cut and sewed a few more border pieces for Holy Toledo, an older ufo in my 5 quilt projects. I will need 36 border sections to complete the border. I finished these at a Friday sew group. I was using this project as leader/enders for correcting my hourglass blocks for pfeffernuuse.

I had discovered many of the hourglass blocks were sewn wrong. I spent a few evening times to unpick them, and had a chance to resew them Friday. It was an easy fix. In between sewing, I made hsts and blocks for Holy Toledo. It made both, somewhat boring jobs, a little more fun.

I found this cute little kit at a garage sale. As far as I can tell, all the pieces of fabric are still there. I have a few friends that are chocolate lovers.

I am working on Carmen's rug. I plan on doing the house next to the yellow house.

pfeffernusse progress

Red was the color of the month in April for the rainbow scrap challenge. I worked on an older ufo from 2016 to move it along called pfeffernuuse. By the end of the month, I had all the large HSTS made. I noticed when I put it away, at the end of the month, that all the red hourglass blocks were not the same. This month is brown or black. That means I can revisit this ufo. I am really glad to restart the project in October to correct the problem, and maybe make a top.

I started making the hourglass blocks in 2017.

This note was in the box. I must have sewn all willy nilly, when I started making them years ago.

I started the string blocks in 2016.

chunky churn dash finish

I found the top for chunky churn dash in with my rug hooking earlier this year. I thought it was lost forever. I have no idea why it went on vacation with the rug hooking wool, but, I am glad I found it. Chunky churn dash is a free Bonnie Hunter pattern, and I really like the way it looks when finished.

I started the scrappy blocks in 2013. Apparently, I had made the top and then, it was lost. I made it a priority for my 5 quilt project. I added borders and, now, it is finished.
