5 quilt march

  last report February 28, 2025

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another.   PHD in 2025 Project List

I finished 3 ufos in March

I worked on these older Ufos to finish them

72 x72

strip joint- I took this with me to Florida as a back up project. It is finished

66 x80

tiny tuesday -  My March monthly goal  is finished

60 x 63

1. kaleidoscope - I have all the borders made and ready to attach to the top

2. peppermint candy - I made all the blocks and I am deciding on sashing. I have a fabric precut and ready to use, but, so far, I am not thrilled with it. This will be my one monthly goal for April

3. scrappy twirl - I need to join the blocks with the border

4. fancy fox - a new older ufo on the list and it needs sashings and assembly

5. hollow nine - rainbow scrap challenge that needs the border.

My PHD report

scrap cutting

I have added another goal to the 5 quilts project. I want to take one day a month and cut scraps. I will have plenty to choose from since I really didn't cut any for 2024, and the bags of uncut scraps are piling up, all over the fabric room.

I cut a big scrap bag for March and it weighed 2 pounds and 13 ounces which = 8 1/2 yards of useable scrappy fabric.

 quilts to be quilted:

Looking forward to April

stash report March 30, 2025

I can't believe it is the end of March.  I visited a garage sale for a member of our guild who had passed away last year. Mostly, her children, priced the fabric very high, and very few of us went home with much of anything. I tried, but, the only thing I bought was a ziplock of fat quarters that seemed to coordinate. There were 13 for 15.00

I found this wonderful vintage piece for 2.00  I asked my hubby why this reminded me of him, and he said that it looked like the wallpaper of his room when he was a boy. haha  That was a longtime ago.

Tiny Tuesday sampler finish

I decided to make tiny Tuesday quilt my one monthly goal for March. It was part of the 5 quilt project last year. I didn't get it done in 2024, so I added it to this year's ufo projects. This was a QAL with the rainbow scrap challenge in 2019. It was so much fun to make the the blocks each week and use up the scraps at the same time. The blocks were designed by the academic quilter. After the blocks were done, those participating were on their own for how to finish it. I used a few orphan blocks to make it a little bigger and to fill out the rows. I used a scrappy white with pink rosebuds for the backing and the background fabric for the binding.

60 x 63 =14 yards

tiny tuesday borders

I have added the first border and I am prepping the rest. It was scarey, but they are all cut, and so far, nothing bad has happened to them. The border fit, and, I have decided to do square in a square corners. I am happy to see the end of this older ufo. I may meet my one monthly goal of a finish for March. Tulips are up and the forsythia is starting to bloom, We've had a lot of wind here lately. The top half of a tall pine tree broke off and landed in 1 piece. I've seen the whole tree fall many times but not just the whole top.

I decided to donate an older ufo kit with all the pieces to the guild. I am still digging through piles. We have a guild quilt show in April and I want to unload some projects I will never get to making.

zipper progress

I had time to make a few more foursies with  my zipper blocks. I could catch up blue and yellow centers for the rainbow scrap challenge. These are large hunks ready to be assembled when the colors are finished this year

I cut and finished the yellow zig zag blocks and noticed there wasn't any blue in the drawer and made them as well. Now the drawer looks right.

I may regret not ironing them each month.

yellow and blue skies

I am reexamining my string blocks for blue skies which was originally made for the quilt blue skies from Bonnie Hunter book string fling.  I made the string blocks during a string basket cleaning in 2016. I was string piecing anything in the book I might want to make while I was playing with strings. At some point, I decided I would not want to cut and make 2,376 hsts for the quilt.  I found another quilt that I could make instead.

I didn't get any of this quilt done during February and the blue color for the rainbow scrap challenge. The color for March is yellow, so, I didn't have to put it away again. I don't think I will get it finished this year. It isn't a 5 quilt ufo project. It is a rsc project. But, I can certainly continue through March. I cut all the 7 1/2 inch squares in white that I would need to make larger hsts with the string blocks.

I laid the color square and the white squares right side together and sliced them diagonally.

I am using the yellow hsts as leader/ enders as I work on other projects. Any that I finish now, will move the project forward and be a bonus later.

I like making string blocks, and I like string quilts= a perfect match for this project
