unity quilt 3

I tried to make progress on the unity mystery quilt last week. I have all the pieces cut, sewn and the stars sewn together. They are so cute, but, it seemed to take forever to make them. The reveal for old country mystery quilt came out and I really want to work on that. We have been outside more and I have been quilting on the longarm.

The flying geese were the littlest I have ever made. It was important to make sure the red was on the right and aqua on the left.

Did I mention they are very cute?

Time to hurry and finish the on ringo lake mystery quilt from quiltville. Bonnie has ramped up the last of the clues and today was the reveal. I am toggling between the last clues. I needed to starch the fabric for the coral triangles in clue 6. I have a few more to trim on clue 5 and I have sewn half of the clue 7 together because the pieces were all done earlier.
I am choosing to do the studio 180 technique for the flying geese using the wing clipper template. I used it in clue 2 and I really liked it. I like that it makes 4 at a time.

Jo of Jo's Country Junction has a string fling challenge each Monday. She is planning on making all the quilts from one book called String fling.  When I did the tally from my book. I was surprised how many I have started. But, for my challenge, I want to finish all the mystery quilts from Quiltville. I have them all started and several just need quilting. So for 2018, I plan to finish all 16 mystery quilts.

ringo lake and wing clipper

I decided to use the Deb Tucker wing clipper for my flying geese in clue #2.
I cut the large squares at 4 1/2 inches and the small squares at 2 1/2 inches.  I figured I would get 9 squares from each strip of coral and I needed 50, so I needed 6 strips, which was 27 inches. I cut 28 inches and thoroughly starched the fabric before cutting. My measurements for the 2 1/2 inch squares as I was using fat quarters were that I would need 5 fat quarters and 200 squares, which I thoroughly starched before cutting.

 I decided that since the pieces were intentionally ovcersized I would not take the time to mark the diagonal, and used 2 pieces of  1/4 in tape to keep it straight.

After the quarter inch is stitched on both sides of the diagonal, I cut them apart and added another square to each end.

I cut them apart and had 4 flying geese from that set

The geese needed a little trimming using the lines on the wing clipper

And they were as nearly perfect as I have ever made them.

In my opinion, this is the best flying geese method I have ever tried. I tried eleanor burns method earlier this year here, and I did not like it. I felt there was a lot of waste in time and fabric. I tried just the regular flip and sew method, but I seem to lose the quarter inch at the top.

I am still happy with my starch experiment and will continue using it. I think the cutting is better if i pre starch.

some parts are just boring

I have a little quilter's ad(h)d - definitely without the h - no hyperactivity here. For Aunt Marys irish chain, I am making flying geese using the quilt in a day flying geese ruler. I am not enjoying the process. It seems like extra work and wasteful. Still, once I committed, and cut the squares, there was no going back. So I have been marking and sewing and marking and sewing and trimming and trimming.

Maybe when all is said and done, the perfect little geese will scream it was worth it, but so far I am not hearing anything. They are cute and tiny - finish at 1 x2, and I need 280 of them.

And then, when I couldn't sew another goose, I started on 9 patch babies made with 1 1/2 inch strips.

And when I was tired of those, well,
I had a fight with winding a bobbin, and just plain stubborness took over and I was determined to rewind the thread, and I found myself an hour later, with this mess. I saved a lot of it but no more. Thread is not that expensive.
