week 2 - February green rainbow scrap challenge

I decided to layout my estate sale blocks and see how I want to place the colors for the rainbow scrap challenge. I had made my own soul searching quilt in 2018. Hazel had her own take on the design.

It is the first round of borders that makes these blocks stand out. I made the scrappy border last week for  square, play.

The first row of soul searching has been sewn together. I did have a bit of trimming. Each block is 24 1/2 x 28 1/2. That took some head scratching to trim something that large.

stash report February 8, 2026

I was visiting a thrift store to find warmer clothes to wear, and found these two lovely bundles of white. I seem to be using a lot of white in my rainbow scrap challenge projects, and, was afraid I might run dry. They were 1.00 a yard. They had other random fabrics, even a scrap bag (my favorite) I carried them around for awhile, hearing them whisper "take me home". But, I left the store without them.

 stash report February 8, 2026

fabric added this week: 3 yards

fabric added year to date for 2026:  10 yards

fabric used this week: o yards

fabric used year to date for  2026  o yards

I have added 10 yards more than I used.

I sewed 6 days last week.

I have decided to work on my older ufo applique project - across the wide missourri- again, as we will be spending quality car time, on vacation

I like these big pieces for the next cabin. They work quickly.

It was time to move the Christmas rug on the frame. It doesn't seem like it, but, I have made progress.

week 1 - February green rainbow scrap challenge

For the rainbow scrap challenge   I made a soul searching quilt as rsc in 2018. I even taught a workshop for my quild for this quilt. These blocks, I found at an estate sale for a 97 year old guild member. She was a dear member. She had all the blocks pieced, but had not assembled the quilt. I brought it with me and want to add this to my projects since it is the only green I have with me.

Last month, I cut each rsc project and finished it before cutting another. Now, that I am comfortable with the process, I decided to live it up and cut them all at once, using green, of course- Square dance, square play, rolling windmill, and candy

Now the fun begins

The square, play block needs frames of 2 1/2 inch squares. I enjoy sewing these randomly in between the other block projects. And, it is like rediscovering loved fabrics..... still they overflow

I had been working on on an alternative blue skies string quilt. I managed to finish the center top. I like it so far. I bought 2 shirts at a thrift store that I will cut to make the borders.

stash report February 1, 2026

I was in need of border fabrics for my blue skies quilt. I checked hobby lobby and was unimpressed with my choices in yellow and blue. It is a string quilt, so my next choice was thrift shirts. Some thrift stores here are very pricey. But I found these that were just right. I don't count shirt fabric in my yardage totals since I haven't bought any in a very long time, but I am away from home. I don't really want to do the math to add it now.

fabric added this week: 0 yards

fabric added year to date for 2026:  7 yards

I sewed 4 days last week.

I have decided to work on my older ufo applique project - across the wide missourri- again, as we will be spending quality car time, on vacation

I finished the last block, so it's time to begin block 8. I traced the pieces on freezer paper and cut them out.

January week 5 flying home top

This is a bonus week 5 for the rainbow scrap challenge. I have finished the top for flying home. I really like my flamingo border. I think it looks better with 2 additional rows. I will have to wait until I get home to quilt it.

58 x 74

The nova star alternative to blue skies is growing as I add rows: that I triple check for placement. I will have most of the yellow blocks left, probably enough for a small quilt.

I looking forward to a new color in February.

week 4 January blue rainbow scrap challenge

This is week 4 already for the rainbow scrap challenge. I have assembled all the blocks I had made for  flying home. I definitely want it bigger.  I have 8 leftover blocks. I only have to make 4 more to add a row to the top and bottom. That is what I have decided to do. I made a trip to hobby lobby and found a really great border fabric, too.

zig zag quilt, is last year's rsc project. I cut and sewed all the blocks. This year, the plan is to take all the single units in the color of the month, and sew twosies with any other color. That way, I won't even notice I am working on assembling the quilt. Sneaky right?

I added the color to the 16 patches I made last week for my square dance  blocks. Very nice and scrappy.

I cut for rolling windmills. It was a bit challenging. All the pieces for the block need to be facing up to cut them. I had 2 that I didn't get right.

They are very cute.

I brought the string blocks from blue skies with me on vacation. I pieced the first row. I am following a graph for a supernova layout I found online. I am angularly challenged, so I must have checked it 20 times before sewing it together. I hope to get more done this month.

stash report January 18, 2026

I am working on a quilt for the rainbow scrap challenge called flying home . I am nearly done with the top. I didn't bring any border fabric with me, so, drat, I had to go to hobby lobby for fabric. I really liked the flamingo fabric. It sure isn't my usual style ( if i have one) but, it came home with me.

 stash report January 18, 2026

fabric added this week: 2 yards

fabric added year to date for 2026:  7 yards

It is starting to look like a cabin and I am more encouraged. It was time to add the roof.

week 3 January blue rainbow scrap challenge

I spent time building rows for  flying home  for the rainbow scrap challenge this week. I am gratefull, that there are very few seams that need to match. I am sewing away from home with my trusty featherweight, Florence. I realize how much I take for granted having a real sewing room back home.

I made 4 square play blocks by finishing with a border of scrappy 2 1/2 inch squares. I really like them. They are bigger than I expected, so I will have a donation quilt, sooner than expected,

I had leftover strips from making candy chains.  and decided to make the chain blocks for candy chains.  I am glad to be that much further ahead.

While I was sewing other parts for the challenge, I made 2 inch 16 patches for square dance  as leaders and enders.

And just because, I added blue skies to my projects this month. Blue skies is an older ufo that I moved forward last year. I started ironing the hsts which are 7 1/2 inches. I have a different idea for them than the quiltville quilt that I had originally planned.

stash report January 11, 2026

I ordered during black friday at missouri star quilts. I didn't take the time to unbox during the Christmas rush. My goal is to intentionally put it away where it belongs - it might take awhile....

My hubby loves a good pair of scissors. I ordered these as a back up for him. I liked the border idea for a panel quilt.

week 2 January blue rainbow scrap challenge

I was able to make 4 blue candy chains blocks which was my goal for the rainbow scrap challenge. So far, they are quick and easy. I am undecided about including the 9 patch chain in this year's plans.

I chose 4 of my 4 1/2 inch squares for square, play. I added a 2 1/2 inch border in  scrappy white, and cream. They are cute just the way they are.

I played with the blocks to decide on this arrangement for flying home . This an older rsc ufo from 2019. I have 8 leftover blocks. If I make 4 more, I might could add a row to the top and bottom to make it bigger.  hmmm

I was able to make the scrappy border pieces for the square play blocks by sewing in between the other sewing. I look forward to adding them next week to see the whole block. I am guessing that this project will still not empty the forever box of 2 1/2 inch squares.

stash report January 4, 2026

I really like the challenge of a weekly stash report. I like starting the new year fresh and watching the progress on keeping the fabric purchases low. It is fun to see how much I use. I spent a few years adding to my fabric retirement portfolio, now I have the chance to see it make wonderful quilty stuff.

I ordered during black friday at missouri star quilts. I didn't take the time to unbox during the Christmas rush. My goal is to intentionally put it away where it belongs - it might take awhile....

I love floral fabrics. I bought several pieces of this collection - wildflower bouquet. This a layer cake and  2 yards of the floral fabric.

The next block is a big one with a primitive log cabin. The boxy part was easy to applique, but the chinking is challenging. It looks so big.

week 1 January rainbow scrap challenge

Candy chains is a free pattern from quilted twins. I cut the first pieces in blue for the rainbow scrap challenge

I have chosen the blue squares for a square play block from my 4 1/2 inch scrap drawer.

I will dig through my 2 1/2 inch squares for borders for the blocks.

I began flying home  for the rainbow scrap challenge in 2019.Since then, I have lost it, found it, lost it again, and found it, for I hope, the last time. Our color for the month is blue, and I am using this quilt as part of that color. The goal is to make a top by the end of January. All the blocks are done.
