cutting scraps for June

One of my monthly goals for the 5 quilt project is to spend one day a month cutting scraps. This is the 4th month in a row. three of those months have been this box of shirts.

I found a box of scrappy leftovers of shirt fabric, that is my next project for scrap cutting. It weighed 9 pounds 13 ounces. I am trying to spend my time at Friday sew, once a month, to cut scraps.

I saw the bottom of the box this time. I had big pieces that I replaced in the box that I will cut with my accu-cut at home. There was an uncut shirt at the bottom of the box which is on it's way to the rescue mission.

This time the cut pieces weighed 3 pounds 6 ounces which is 10 1/2 yards of useable fabric. The total yardage for the box was 26 1/2 yards of useable fabric. For the year, the total is 35 yards of useable fabric. And I had fun socializing while I was doing it -bonus.

All the rest are cut into 10, 5, 3 1/2, 2 1/2, 2, 1 1/2 inches or strips

This is the trash I made.

And these are the string pieces for another day. By this time, I admit the strings are much bigger than usual. I was tired of cutting haha

I have made several shirt quilts from recycled shirts over the years. They are some of my favorirtes, and that keeps me motivated to keep cutting this huge box of shirt pieces.

  1. Admirable progress indeed. Around here fabric can easily be recycled, in case you would rather not have ANY "trash".

  4. That's a lot of work cutting up those shirts, but will sure pay off in the future when you're ready to use those pieces.

  5. The usable scraps are definitely worth the effort, but id's definitely not a lot of fun to spend a lot of time cutting even if it does pay off. Great sticktoitness!
